I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I don't have a lot of patience with people who tell me writing is agony. I know that it is for a lot of great writers so I respect that, but still, I feel privileged to be able to make a living writing. (1982)

for them, migrants exist only as economic units to be squeezed of labour, taxes and other forms of value. he talks about not selling citizenship, but what is tying citizenship to your past and potential future earnings – your "ability to contribute" – if not selling citizenship on a payment plan?

people like McDowell just can't countenance the reality that, for a lot of Irish people, "céad míle fáilte" isn't just a tourist slogan, it's an articulation of this country's traditional values. half our myths are people getting cursed for violating sacred duties of hospitality towards strangers

Yet this is war: war for which all the jingoes are howling, war to which all the hopes of the world are being sacrificed, war to which a mad ruling class would plunge a mad world." - JC

what's crazier: all this crazy stuff people said about shirley temple or that it's not even the craziest thing i have seen people said about shirley temple
Screenshot from wikipedia which reads:

False claims circulated that Temple was not a child, but a 30-year-old dwarf, due in part to her stocky body type. Temple claimed in her autobiography that the Vatican dispatched Father Silvio Masante to investigate whether she was indeed a child; no further evidence was given to corroborate her claim as newspapers of the time simply reported that she was interviewed by the priest who worked as a correspondent for the L'Osservatore Romano.[74] The fact that she never seemed to miss any teeth led some people to conclude that she had all her adult teeth. Temple was actually losing her primary teeth regularly through her days with Fox—for example, during the sidewalk ceremony in front of Grauman's Theatre, where she took off her shoes and placed her bare feet in the concrete, taking attention away from her face. When acting, she wore dental plates and caps to hide the gaps in her teeth.[75] Another rumor said her teeth had been filed to make them appear like baby teeth.[76]

A rumor about Temple's trademark hair was that she wore a wig. On multiple occasions, fans yanked her hair to test the rumor. She later said she wished all she had to do was wear a wig, bemoaning the nightly process she had to endure in the setting of her curls as tedious and grueling, with weekly vinegar rinses that stung her eyes.[77]

When I was 18 this review was a good way to convince my friends that Dolly Parton is Actually Really Good; now that I am in my 50s, this review is a good way to convince my friends that Bob Christgau is Actually Really Good
Best of Dolly Parton [RCA Victor, 1975]
In her productivity and devotion to writing Parton is like a nineteenth-century woman novelist--a hillbilly Louisa May Alcott. What's best about her is her spunkiness and prettiness (Jo crossed with Amy); what's worst is her sentimentality and failures of imagination (Beth crossed with Meg). And this is the best of her best. At least half of these songs have an imaginative power surprising even in so fecund a talent--images like the bargain store and the coat of many colors are so archetypal you wonder why no one has ever thought of them before. The psychological complexities of "Jolene" and "Traveling Man" go way beyond the winsome light melodramas that are Parton's specialty. And even when the writing gets mawkish--"I Will Always Love You" or "Love Is Like a Butterfly"--her voice is there to clear things up. A+
