I’m thrilled to have my poem close out this collection, and to be included among such remarkable company! There’s something strangely wonderful, and frankly terrifying, about seeing your words out in the world. Be gentle with mine!

They need to read up on Asquith and Ireland. The parallels are hard to ignore: a downward spiral into violent domestic unrest largely created by a cabinet wholly unwilling to take action. And we all know that we're still living with the consequences.

I'll listen to opinions about 'academic standards' when people have the same energy for what closing rank around immoral and criminal behaviour does for the standards of the academy. I’ll believe the press care about public interest when they report on powerful white men with the same impunity.

"Within an hour He began to see stars, burning their way through the black; memories of galaxies forming before His eyes."
In the Pit Beneath Caiaphas' House
From the vanishing song by jay hulme

The night before the crucifixion He sat
alone in the darkness; chest harnessed
by ropes, arms bound in chains.

When the pit was sealed and He opened
His eyes the dark went on forever.
Within an hour He began to see stars,
burning their way through the black;
memories of galaxies forming before His eyes.

That night He prayed in the quiet, knowing
tomorrow He'd lie in the earth again;
in a sandstone tomb designed, like this, for men.

I submitted the following response:
Amnesty International UK’s retraction and apology show, once again, how easily the language of freedom can be weaponised. So-called ‘gender-critical politics’ is an anti-rights ideology that seeks to restrict trans people’s freedom, dignity, agency, and participation. Nor is it marginal or silenced: claims of ‘cancellation’ conceal the considerable political, legal, and media influence of organisations promoting these views. When scrutiny is framed as persecution, the material consequences for trans people disappear.

Amnesty’s stated commitment to women, girls, and trans people is therefore insufficient. Abstract support for everyone does not determine what justice requires when rights claims conflict and power is unequally distributed. We must ask who holds power, who bears the cost, and whose life becomes more precarious. Silence about these inequalities is complicity.

As Esther McIntosh argues, the gender-critical position restricts the freedoms of trans women, cis women, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people. Amnesty’s apology ignores these effects, speaking instead in managerial language about procedure, oversight, and ‘research standards.’ Its claim that management acted only after being notified distances leaders from both the researchers and their analysis. Invoking protection for ‘all marginalised groups’ flattens unequal power and provides cover for capitulation under pressure.

Trans rights are human rights.

The front cover of Sacramental Trans Feminism: Ritualism, Liberation and Trans Rites by Chris Clare Dingwall-Jones, published by SCM Press. The cover shows a black-and-white Victorian cartoon with two individuals in High Church Anglo-Catholic clerical vestments on the left, a smaller person in a dress carrying a candle and a man on the right looking dismayed at this. The bottom of the image has the colours of the trans flag: baby blue, baby pink and white.

Increasingly, I’m convinced that so many of my convictions can be summed up thus: practical theological qualitative research should not merely tell us what follows from people’s lives; its form should allow those lives to exceed what the researcher asks of them.
