We’re consulting on potential reforms to the CfD for the next renewables allocation round, later this year - among them, longer contracts as we as some other new parameters. These are some of the most important changes that we can implement for the 2030 clean power mix. www.gov.uk/government/c...

These last two weeks are providing a lot of reasons to talk about electricity market decarbonization and risk. Here, the UK is setting a good example of how to accelerate decarbonization by addressing risk allocation problems that otherwise hinder renewables and energy storage investment. 🧵🔌💡

I’ve had a Bluesky account for quite a long time, but it has only become useable very recently. That’s social networks for you. Twitter is still unrivalled for getting a message out quickly. LinkedIn is like putting a sign in the proverbial village square. They’ll mostly see it but not immediately.

I confess I’m finding it hard to love twitter now. The direct engagement with curious people used to be a wonderful thing. It doesn’t happen so much now (see 400+ replies to this: x.com/starkclimate... But I worry that polarised views won’t be helped much by having social networks for each ‘group’.

There’s loads more in this report. Do read it. The final point to make is an obvious one: this won’t be possible without substantial reform across a whole host of policy priorities. And, crucially, without serious reforms to the pace of development. We’re on it.

Chris Stark @chrisstark.bsky.social · 05/11/2024
Reducing the cost of electricity rests on bringing lots of clean power onto the system under long-term contracts, reducing the points in the year when gas sets the price paid by consumers. That’s good for energy security; importing less gas at volatile prices on global markets.
100
Chris Stark @chrisstark.bsky.social · 05/11/2024
On electricity bills, there’s the very striking conclusion that overall costs to consumers would not increase from the shift to a clean power system. NESO acknowledge that we @energygovuk have tools at our disposal that will allow us to further lower consumer bills. We agree.

Chris Stark @chrisstark.bsky.social · 05/11/2024
Likewise, there’s a huge skills and workforce challenge in delivering CP2030 - 10s of thousands of jobs across Britain. That could become a blocker of progress if we don’t act ahead of need, but it’s an enabler of highly-transferable skills and jobs across the country if we do.

Chris Stark @chrisstark.bsky.social · 05/11/2024
CP2030 is an investment prospectus for the UK. NESO estimate investment of £40bn+ per year - mostly private. Our opportunity to land new industries and supply chains. UK will be leading the world with some first of a kind projects. That can deliver a lasting industrial benefit.
