Any analysis of the Iran War that doesn't start and end with the fact that an entire cottage industry of think tankers and lobbyists and their friends in Congress were frothing at the mouth for literal decades for this got exactly what they wanted and it failed immediately and totally is wrong.

Mechwarriors were landed gentry who had a monoploy on the most powerful military equipment in the Succession wars. And the Clans are even worse with a literal caste system that puts them at the top. Not sure Welsh people qualify though. #battletech #Mechwarrior

I'm the only person I know that would rather spend a Sunday afternoon arguing about politics than watching football. Not because I love cyclical arguments with people who aren't interested in honest discussion, but because football bores me that much.

Innit.
Nearly 60 years ago, the artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles wrote an essay
titled "Manifesto for Maintenance Art 1969!". She argued that the work of
maintenance is often unappreciated and devalued - "a drag; it takes all the
fucking time" - next to the more celebrated work of creation. "After the
revolution, who's going to pick up the garbage on Monday morning?" asked
Ukeles, who has served as the artist in residence for the New York City
Department of Sanitation since 1977. She argued that society "confers lousy
status" on those who do maintenance.
This is perhaps truer than ever in the era of the "creator economy" and tech
industrialists who burn and build and move fast and break things. To the
"creators" go wealth and prestige while the maintainers work in the
background, scraping rust and justifying their existence to a society that takes
 them for granted.
Add to this a generation of generative Al tools designed and marketed as
instruments of creation. These tools have made it trivial to make images, write
novels, build software and pollute the internet with slop. Rarely has a tech CEO
touted an AI tool that will "supercharge maintenance".
 ". Maintenance is careful
 work and not easily shortcut.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

TODAY'S COMIC: Someone! www.sheldoncomics.com/comic/someone/
PANEL 1: A tubby, bald man wearing a white collared shirt, with a blue and orange striped tie, holds a AR-type riffle with one hand, shooting into the air. The bright yellow light casts harsh shadows on him.
MAN: Please! Someone stop this weapon that I’m clearly shooting!

PANEL 2: The man bends over to reload the weapon with a “KLAK” sound.
MAN: The weapon keeps reloading itself, with SERO INVOLVEMENT FROM ME!

PANEL 3: The man continues to shoot in to the air.
MAN: I have no agency here! Nothing that I could do —SAY WITH MY OWN FINGERS — could end this!

PANEL 4: The man, still shooting the gun, turns his back, still yelling over his shoulder.
MAN: WHY IS NOBODY STOPPING THIS THING I KEEP DOING???
On the back of his shirt reads: LITERALLY EVERY A.I. COMPANY.

I was looking up a mineral this afternoon, and the invasive AI didn't want to recognize it. It told me that I was misspelling a different mineral (I was not) or that I meant a city in Greece (again I did not). AI is so inaccurate that its easier to gas-light users than make it work.

I just realized yet another problem with generative AI keeping it non-viable. It relies on training data pulled from social media, especially reddit. But social media accounts get hacked regularly and converted into bots. Its got a built in vulnerability before the software level.

Something that occurs to me is how tech CEOs all pushed generative AI as a way to have an artist or musician who could create whatever they wanted without having to develop the skills to do it themselves. But that's something rich people have done throughout history by paying people.

I'm noticing that the main talking point people defending AI use is telling us about how it benefited them personally. That's nice for convincing people to try a new shampoo, but in the context of worries about the economy and unemployment it sounds like "I'm profiting from your losses".

Mining is cheap and fast in video games because it's necessary for the game design.
