Discovered this starter pack by @schlage.town (since I happen to be in it), and I like the idea of gpot as a term. One reason I’m paying less attention to tpot these days is it’s simply too time-consuming to have to research every new person you meet to make sure they don’t have extreme politics.

The Tesla flying car video is especially gross to see when you recall how the company’s leader has undermined technological progress in other areas of society, ie. medical research. What he’s showing you is not about technology or progress at all, which may be why it’s such a retro-sounding idea.

"Each pair had a bleached and a healthy fragment. He set up five pairs so that their fragments touched each other, and five with their fragments separated by a few millimetres. In the touching pairs, the bleached coral recovered within eight weeks."

‘Incredible’: bleached corals thrive within days when touching healthy neighbour
A coral fragment can form a tissue bridge with a dying counterpart — and provide it with crucial microalgae.

here’s the irony about the AI panic: you know who is going to be best positioned to develop a product for the guy described below? it’s not going to be a SWE, necessarily, it’s going to be someone with interviewing and people skills.

It’s very funny, and right to @chittimarco.bsky.social’s point, that despite the superiority of the metric system for technical applications, Europe is still dealing with a bunch of weird inconvenient numbers (1435, 1520, 1524) converted from British feet and inch measurements.

the problem with recommending anything because you bought it fifteen years ago and it’s lasted is thats no guarantee that the ones they’re selling today will because tricking you into overpaying for something that resembles a product that used to be good is one of the two business models now

if an AI could play a level like this on the first shot it saw it, that would be ASI to me. and obviously i don't mean a purpose built bot, which microsecond reaction times. it's the ability to predict and track where all the spinning arms are that would sell it for me.

When you're running things at scale like, well, cooling systems, SCADA systems are a fact of life, but the type of user permissions you give are also pretty crucial. Also, securing access to said systems, especially if they give said user (user account?) systems control capability

This reminds me of how the historian Anton Tantner described the introduction of building addresses as making the interior of a home “transparent” to the state for the purpose of monitoring populations for military conscription. Now with AI the tracking & transparency are both becoming more literal.

On the stereotomic end of the argument: 3D printing is a common stereotomic method encountered in schools, but it's often used in ways that don't necessarily interrogate the inherent material/physical nature of what it means to 3D print. As opposed to how much we interrogate the meaning of joints.

Ofc. that issue goes back to Reyner Banham's arguments, but I think it came to me in a new way after realizing how certain approaches to tectonics can almost become a more singular focus within architecture schools than they are within many construction-related and architectural practice settings.

Chenoe Hart @chenoehart.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
(There's also generally a bias towards tectonic rather than stereotomic forms of construction, ie. physical model-making much more rarely involves tasks analogous to bricklaying or concrete pouring compared to how often it involves woodworking.)

Occurs to me there's a subtle implicit bias in architecture studio curriculums where they teach skills analogous to carpentry and framing, in the form of physical model-making, but not by default any skills relating to other trades like electrical, plumbing or HVAC work.

This was only a matter of time. In a very real way, the net effect of networked license plate readers is more like putting a GPS device on a car than it is like driving past individual security cameras. And if police wanted to track you over time w/ GPS device or your phone---they'd need a warrant.

The rise of in-car navigation like Google Maps has actually done a fair amount of damage to cities imo, because it puts a lot of traffic on streets that were never designed for it, because the navigation systems were built on concentrating traffic to arterials with local traffic only elsewhere.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Wonder if there’s any documented correlation between reading fantasy books & navigating real-world maps. When I’m reading a local NYC news story that happened in an unfamiliar location my instinct is to check where it occurred on a map, and that’s also what I did when reading those books as a child.

We already have highly personalized human-made music without needing an AI to do the “personalization” for us. It’s called having songs on your playlist you relate to which you’d be afraid to tell anyone else that you listen to.
