Brilliant @amyremeikis.bsky.social piece here - absolutely gut-wrenching that Nepal PM's speech got buried under the nonsense of AI doom-hype. thepoint.com.au/opinions/260...
“We have built a world with flawless logistics for war, and broken logistics for food, and this is not Nepal’s private misfortune. Ask Bangladesh, ask Bhutan, ask India, ask the Maldives, ask Pakistan, ask Sri Lanka, ask any other country in our region, and you’ll hear the same account.

“Hit by the climate, we did not warm, and again hit by the wars, we did not start.”

Shah is right. Nepal contributes less than 0.1 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. It does not have the institutional or global power to force change, even as its people are swamped by the consequences of inaction.

“Our glaciers are retreating, our mountain slopes are becoming unstable, our rivers are becoming less predictable and every major disaster threatens to erase years of development,” he told the UN.

I still think there is not a good awareness out there of just how much the AI industry plans to run off fossil fuels. This is a *conservative* estimate that excludes many planned projects. These are weak plans and they can be stopped. au.finance.yahoo.com/news/us-data...
Investing.com -- Data centers in the United States are projected to consume more natural gas than most countries within the next ten years, according to a new outlook from BloombergNEF.

Natural gas consumption for electricity generation at data centers is forecast to increase by 15 billion cubic feet per day in the decade ending in 2035, even when accounting for planned projects that may never be completed. This volume exceeds the current gas consumption of all nations except China, Russia, Iran and the United States, based on data from the US Energy Information Administration. The projection is more than double BloombergNEF's December forecast of 6.9 billion cubic feet per day.

Hearing lots about AI risk of killing us all in the short term, and using loads of energy & water, so hastening climate demise if we survive the former. Is there a really compelling case for why it's still being championed by governments? What benefits outweigh a liveable planet?

My prediction is that we will never have enough CO₂ removal (CDR), so overshoot is not a thing. We will hit 1.5°C global warming by 2030, and every tonne of CO₂ we emit will make the world warmer. Where we stop is entirely up to us, but there’s no dialing down the temperature after that.
