When I say the politics will become increasingly obvious... I mean look at this. If you want to unite the left/centre and split the Tories, without a big spending committment there's no better option.

Actual vote share ~63%

Charles Owen @charlesowen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
I expected a lower turnout. The higher turnout figure may suggest that the uk public may be about to do “boats mc boat face pt 2” I think Farage will still win but I think he will be <70% vote share and extremely embarrassed

Charles Owen @charlesowen.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
But as the turnout is 43% which means 33.6k voters this time round 70% vote share would be 23.5 k votes which would be more actual votes than he got in the GE. (21.2k) Do you really think that more people will vote for him on this by election that voted for him in the GE ?

Completely agree, and this was a political choice to not fund / prioritise this. I hope the uk Covid enquiry investigates and questions these political choices fully and that we all learn some lessons from it

Now don’t get me wrong I think the govt response to the pandemic was too late, too weak and led to too many unnecessary deaths. But re school closures the area that needs more questions is why there were so few plans for how to mitigate the impacts of the closures - that in my mind was criminal.

Also I am not sure who @lewisgoodall.com is suggesting is at fault here, apart from himself/the wider media. If he thought there were legitimate questions to be raised either then or now, then I dunno, possibly as a journalist with a popular podcast platform then invite experts on and question them

Charles Owen @charlesowen.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Also school closures WERE questioned repeatedly both during and after covid. Trying to insinuate that they weren’t questioned as @lewisgoodall.com does, strongly suggests a lack of neutrality on this point.

🧵On @thenewsagents.co.uk yesterday, school closures and the lab leak theory were offered as two examples of legitimate questions that were hard to ask. Both have in fact been asked constantly since 2020. But here's a thread on why I think they were wrong and dangerous on school closures 1/12

Agree with this. Some people think Musk is exploiting division to advance his business interests. The reality is he’s so wealthy he can pursue his racist agenda without caring about the commercial hit, which anyway is borne by others.

Agreed, which is precisely why we need strong, strategic and principled political leadership on both sides of the channel to rise above all of that for the long term good of the country/continent. I remain optimistic that it is possible but I also realise that the forces you mention may prevent it.

Forget about “can’t be seeing for Brexit to be going well (EU)” or “can’t break manifesto commitments on EU (UK)” the world is a very different place and you have to react accordingly … and FAST

Apart from being somewhat speechless …. the only positive I can see is that this SHOULD encourage UK Govt and EU (particularly French) to think more strategically and arrange a much closer political / economic relationship ASAP. The future is multi polar power blocs, the UK needs to be part of one!

I have been campaigning for a UK-EU Youth Mobility scheme for 5 years along with some superb partners in @bestforbritain.org and ABTA. So I was very proud to be at the #labconf25 to hear the chancellor speak so positively about the government’s intention to implement this scheme.

This should help UK Govt be more courageous in the coming EU 'reset' negotiations...the EU will want ambition on youth mobility, which is a harder sell than the 'veterinary' deal Nick Thomas-Symonds is pushing on today. Of course all of this still relatively cosmetic for total trade purposes.
