Hey you, Europe, You know how we started a war without telling you, failed badly, and hurt all our economies? No, after we tariffed you, lectured you that Russia isn’t a threat, and demanded territory. Okay. So. Weaken yourself to rescue us or we’ll hurt our own economy more and you’ll be sorry.

Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

In Texas, Something Seismic Is Happening—and It’s All Trump’s Fault
Thanks to the economy and ICE, Trump has lost Texas Latinos. And James Talarico is developing a humane pro-immigrant message that’s resonating—even in this ultra-Trumpy state.

Is the vitriol a bit deranged? Totally. Do I feel bad for a CDU politician getting dragged by the public for putting a big old beach chair on his office balcony? No. If Amthor wants a piece of home that adds ambience to his office, he can get a pot and plant some sea grass in it.*

Charles Martin-Shields @charlesmartinshields.com · 29/09/2026
The second thing is the average voter lives in a world where €1200 is a lot of money. For voters, scandals measured in millions to billions are bad in an abstract way that’s hard to channel anger at. But a funny chair on your tax payer funded office balcony? Tangible and easy to get outraged at.

Charles Martin-Shields @charlesmartinshields.com · 29/09/2026
I see two things. The CDU has been carrying on about how people need to work more, retire later, etc etc. So a CDU politician adding this sort of frivolous ‘luxury’ to their tax payer funded office invites blowback. If your party’s strategy is “Be the Biggest Scold” this is what you sow.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

When authoritarian regimes collapse, their leaders experience symbolic deaths, largely through the destruction & removal of monuments that they've built to glorify themselves and affirm their power. Sometimes called "iconoclasm," who gets a statue or monument is always a symbolic struggle for power.
