90% of those held at Delaney Hall have no criminal history. People detained at Delaney Hall were being paid $1/day to work — then the facility suspended that pay while keeping up demand for the work. Trump’s mass deportation machine is not about crime reduction. It is about prison labor camps.

airing the BAFTA award ceremony on a tape delay, leaving in a slur, but editing out "free Palestine"?? that too is a choice, and an egregious one at that! archive.ph/YMhlK
screenshot from the linked Vanity Fair article reading as follows:

Though the BAFTAs aired on a tape delay, the slur was nevertheless included in the 7 p.m. broadcast—though the BBC did not air outstanding-British-debut winner Akinola Davies Jr. saying “free Palestine” at the end of his speech, according to Deadline. (The BBC told Deadline that “all edits were made to ensure the program was delivered to time.”) Sinners production designer Hannah Beachler wrote on X that while the Davidson situation “is almost impossible…it happened 3 times that night, and one of the three times was directed at myself on the way to dinner after the show.”

From Hamdan Ballal, co-director of last year’s Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land.” This is happening now.
Statement from Oscar-winning director
Hamdan Ballal:
This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after l returned from Los Angeles-Shem Tov Lusky-again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital.
I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank.
Email me to coordinate your visit:
hamdanalhrane90@gmail.com
Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day.
We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky-the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year-came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital.
The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.

A week ago we had an incident where there was a school bus with the STOP sign open and kids were getting on the bus and it was surrounded by ICE agents. And this is 7:20 in the morning and — just — you get that fight-or-flight response.” At first her 9-year-old was carrying her passport in her backpack; now it’s in her back pocket. “I have to prepare them for it if they get stopped,” she says. “I said, Do not engage. This is not the time to be cussing at anyone. But she said, Mom, if I create enough noise, my friends can get away.”

I have been on the Byrne-Cannavale reptile beat since October, thank you very much.
Rafa, one of Byrne’s sons, desperately wants a pet chameleon, but so far she has held firm. Instead, he’s been summoning his mother’s powers of improv. “He’s always asking me, ‘Hey, Mom, what if we went outside and there was a chameleon on the road, and you had to pick it up, and you had to give it to me? What would you do? Act it out! Act it out!’ ” Sitting across from me, she pantomimed her part: noticing the imaginary chameleon, picking it up, bringing it home. Strange that her son wants a chameleon when he already has one.

Today I was in a room full of Jews and Muslims when I found out that a gunman had shot up a Jewish event.
We all shared the pain together. A Palestinian man from Gaza who happened to have moved here 2 weeks before October 7 expressed his pain at our tragedy. Many of his family members are dead, and many others are in tents now. And still, he stood with us.
These moments will be used to divide us. Thats the whole reason they are committed. To tear us all into different factions so one can win and one can lose.
Buying into that worldview hands the shooters and bigots a win by creating the world they want. The only actual way to defeat them is to stand firm in building a world of dignity for all.
This is what the Palestinian in the room did for us. It is what the Muslim man who risked his life to save Jews did. This is the way to win. This is how we beat those who want a world of division and violence.

Ryan Coogler explains why he declined the invitation to join the Academy www.nytimes.com/2025/12/10/m...
Still, there is nuance to all the awards hype. Though “Sinners” looks to be a major Oscar player, that voting body has never nominated Jordan for his acting or Coogler for his directing — indeed, no Black filmmaker has ever won in the latter category. Asked to join the academy in 2016, Coogler declined the invitation.

“It’s not out of animosity,” he told me, noting that he’s stretched thin with commitments to his film school and unions. “And I’m not good at judging things, bro. The act of ‘Hey, pick the best thing’ is very stressful for me, even when there’s no stakes involved.”

He is more drawn to the everyday elements of his career than to the glamorous ballrooms. “People see the tuxedo, they see the red carpet, but it’s real blue-collar folks making these movies happen,” Coogler said, adding that he truly fell in love with filmmaking once he understood that, at its core, it’s a job.A photo of Ryan Coogler
