Since this was described as an official statement from their communications department, I am sharing it here. It is, imo, the standard every publisher should be meeting immediately. I'm grateful to our team at Tor for being so on top of this. (And also Montlake who registered everything.)
We are writing to provide an update regarding copyright registration concerns in connection with the Anthropic class action settlement.

As you may have heard, the settlement agreement for the Bartz v. Anthropic case has been filed for preliminary approval. The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has prepared a detailed press release available here and a list of FAQs available here.

In reviewing our records, we discovered that U.S. copyright registration has not been obtained for some of our authors’ works. From what we currently understand, this was largely our mistake and we take full responsibility. If your work was excluded from the settlement for this reason, we will make you whole by paying you what you otherwise would have been paid under the settlement.

We are also taking corrective action. Our team is conducting a thorough review to identify affected works and close any registration gaps. While this issue is understandably concerning, we want to reassure you that your work has always been protected by U.S. copyright law from the moment of its creation. Registration has implications in the context of lawsuits, but not for the fact of protection.

We regret this error and are committed to making it right. Please reach out to copyrights@macmillan.com with any questions.

Lemme explain what the words BELIEVE WOMEN should mean. They don't mean you have to believe women no matter what. They do mean that you have to treat women as a source the same way you'd treat a man.

Agreed. I had created my own “dnf” exclusive shelf to distinguish those books from the ones I’d finished. GR has many faults, but prioritizing this new feature is not among them imo.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but cops are not allowed to shoot people just because you didn't do what they said. That is called murder when they do that. Some cops are working hard to convince people otherwise.

These declines are MASSIVE. And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING. “Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?” THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it. Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.

A low-hanging fruit for @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social and the new City Council in their first 100 days would be to approve legislation making outdoor dining year round and have it go into effect immediately. Given all the existing design regulations it should be easy to flip the switch on this.

The bad faith actors will dishonestly draw a through line connecting trans people to mass shootings but will skip right to over the fact that many of these mass shooters are racists, antisemites and misogynists because they harbor some of the same sentiments as the shooters.

I'm glad we can go back to hating on Adrienne Adams after having to pretend she wasn't bad. The city council torpedoing outdoor dining over a handful of loud complaints from car owners was such a damning mistake. And I am begging restaurateurs to find someone better than Andrew Rigie to lobby.

Chart showing risk of being murdered in the subway if you rode 500 times last year (0.4 in 100,000) versus other risks such as that of dying in a traffic accident in the US last year (12.1 in 100,000)

Something not limited to Sean Duffy is how people will get into their cars and think nothing of the risk they face of death or injury, which is several orders of magnitude greater than your risk of being hurt on public transit. Driving a car is the most dangerous thing most people do each day.

The more I think about this answer, the more revealing it is that Andrew Cuomo thinks taking the subway every other week is "fairly often." It betrays a complete lack of understanding regarding how so many in New York City use the subway.

Things come and go, and I don't begrudge romantasy its moment in the sun, not in the least because when people come into the bookstore for that romantasy book, they sometimes leave with additional books in tow. Any book that brings people into the store is a good one for the rest of them.
