This is where it got cool! We found this framework also allowed us to evaluate if interactions known to occur in our lab models actually occur in situ! Overall, we think this is a really neat way to better understand microbial dynamics in situ and build better models. We hope you check it out!

However, their approach asked how well an experimental model did for a single bacterial species, and we wanted to know how well it did for the community as a whole. We used chronic wounds as our model system, and were able to use our framework to iteratively improve our model.

We wanted a way to determine how well our experimental model systems captured microbial community physiology in the native environment, building on recent work by @ginalewin.bsky.social and Marvin Whiteley, who used a similar approach using transcriptomics.

Microbiology professors/PIs, would you like to join the microPI slack? Microbiology is defined broadly. This is an open tent. Professor/PI is inclusive to teaching focused roles, or pure research PI roles like a National lab PI. Reply or DM me and I will send you a link.

This has been bubbling up for a while. If enacted, it will formalize the illegal termination of grants and undermine the federal government's role as a trusted partner in accelerating R&D. How do teams plan, hire, and build over the long-term if OMB builds in punishment as a precondition?

This is a disaster. Science is an international endeavor. Major steps forward happen through serendipity and collaboration. Grants fund science, but people -- Americans and non-Americans, both in our country and overseas -- create science. That makes us healthier, richer, and safer.
