It shouldn't be possible to remove a bike lane with an angle grinder. Future bike lanes must be constructed in such a way that they cannot be turned back into traffic or parking lanes without digging up the whole street. Big and overbuilt. I mean...look at this. It was built to be removed.

It's time to vote for better transit! Jeff Leiper is the only mayoral candidate with a serious plan to fix OC Transpo and get our transit system working again. Early voting is October 1st to 4th, and October 16th. The main election day is October 26th. Visit ottawa.ca/vote for more information.

Roads in poor shape? Late for work bc of transit or congestion? Can’t register your kid for swimming or skating bc there aren’t enough spots or the arena closed bc of poor repair condition? Business struggling bc city red tape? Here’s why: decades of underfunded tax base, unsustainable investment 1/

Lou 💞 @catlouuu.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
"Won't it wait?" No, because the situation with the cross light is that that light only lasts for about 15 seconds. So the bus doesn't have time to wait for people to cross the street, get in, and then get moving again. Especially if there's more than one bus at the stop.
000
Lou 💞 @catlouuu.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
So it's quite common for people to cross against the light because if you are on the wrong side of the street as the light turns red and the bus drives up at the same time, and you legally wait 3 minutes for the light to change, the bus will drive away as you are crossing towards the stop.
100
Lou 💞 @catlouuu.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
The thing is, there is rarely much traffic going straight at this crossing and not at this time either, meaning this driver would have had to wait a mere 3 seconds for me to finish crossing. It's also in an area that is very heavy with pedestrians and near two major bus stops.
100
Lou 💞 @catlouuu.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Yes, this just happened to me. I was crossing at one such intersection, because I wasn't going to wait several minutes for the light to cycle to cross, and someone making a left turn literally sped up when he saw me. I'm pretty sure he tried to hit me and would have succeeded had I not stepped back.
110
Lou 💞 @catlouuu.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Car supremacy is when pedestrians are legally only supposed to cross on the white light, but the white light is only on for 20 seconds or so at the start of the cycle, and the traffic light takes 3 minutes to cycle. Then when you cross anyway, drivers literally try to run you over out of anger.

"Increasing investment" is a fascinating way to say "didn't increase funding, banked on upper level funding that never came, and raided the transit reserves" as you can see in this handy graph. The E-Bus pilot launched in 2021, before Mark became Mayor, and the plan was for 450 buses...

Sometimes I walk along a congested street that has both buses and cars on it and I count the number of cars and do my best to count the number of people inside the bus(es)... Usually the number of people on the bus far outweighs the number of people in the cars, even on a road with multiple lanes.

This is a related and expanded graphic which emphasizes an important point: Higher speeds reduce your visibility and reaction time, making it more likely you'll hit someone or something, and then when you *do* hit them, it's more likely to be fatal.
A graphic that says Why Speed Matters

Below that are two stats:

Drivers yield 75% of the time while traveling 20 mph
Drivers yield only 17% of the time when traveling 37 mph

The next line shows that drivers have a much wider field of vision at 15 mph as compared to 30 to 40 mph.

Finally, there are three stats:

9 out of 10 pedestrians survive when hit by a car traveling 20 mph
5 out of 10 survive at 30
1 out of 10 surive at 40

Several people sit and stand on a city sidewalk at dusk, near a curb with traffic passing by. One man sits in a chair under a streetlight or small spotlight, while another sits nearby holding something to his mouth. But many drivers loathe the cameras, claiming they restrict driving “freedom” (although speeding is illegal, but definition). As I wrote last year, critics are loud, but they are a minority. Surveys show that most people in cities and suburbs support the cameras b/c they understand their benefits.
