Underpainting of the final one in this set #wip

Finally the final underpainting in the box of curiosities painting series. This painting has a multi sided face sculpture with the happy face in the light and the scewming fave in the shadow. The box also contains a bottle of marbles with a tiny clay teapot on top of it. A scallop shell rests against the back of the box and giant pink barnacles sit peaking into the light at the front.

Today’s #SciArtSeptember prompt is the colour saffron which made me think of a particular yellow-orange mushroom. This is a hand-carved lino block reduction print of a clump of poisonous, Eastern jack-o-lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens) on a hardwood tree stump. 🧪

As described this is my 8” x 10” linocut reduction print of a clump of several Eastern jack-o-lantern mushrooms in yellow-orange with glow-in-the-dark gills against a decaying tree stump with textured bark in grey, brown and black, and ground with dead leaves with green in a corner of the background. The print is signed and numbered by me, Ele Willoughby, 2024.

Monet's water lily garden in Giverny is an ever-changing and ever-renewing source of inspiration for me. In this painting, I wanted to capture the feeling of water lilies floating on the surface of a still pond, filled with reflections of the clouds. I applied thick brushstrokes of oil paint laid side by side without layering to capture the sense of movement and texture in the scene.

This is a recent #botanicalillustration of the #foxglove #Digitariapurpurea. Although Ive illustrated it before, I wasn't overjoyed with the paintings, so took the opportunity of a free day to complete a better version. With the soft green leanes and purples and spots, its a treat to illustrate.

Sailed Away Russian archipelago frigate Svjatoi Nikolai, which in real life sank in a battle in 1790, has somehow ended up in the Jurassic, on dry land, and with enough force to fell trees. It seems like it's been there for a while. I wonder what happened to the crew?

Texas Hill Country landscape is a beautiful place to experience spring wildflowers. Splashes of color blanket the landscape, from bluebonnets to black-eyed-Susans. This painting captures the beautiful colors of spring with thick, impressionistic brushstrokes.

Today's #ArtRepostJuly theme is #surreal Here's one of the drawings I spent the most time on (in retrospect, I wish I'd kept track of exactly how many hours it took). It's titled "ai angel" and was an early commentary on the alarming rise of AI-generated art. Rare process video in comment!

Its body is made up of computer parts, a smart phone, gears, and extension cords. Its head is split into two parts with one being an old-fashioned heavy microphone with sparking electrical wires and the other being an eye surrounded by a halo of electrified spheres. The overall effect is of an alien and alienating but beautiful being.
