Things that grow on trees - found on a recent walk along the River Wear from Durham City - crabapples, conkers, Norwegian maple seeds, Ramalina lichen, beech nuts and sweet chestnuts. Watercolour painting. Seems to have been a good year for the beech and apples, less so for oaks. 🐡 #botany #lichen

These are three of the enormous variety of fungi that are currenlty fruiting in and around Hay-on-Wye (where I live). I was lucky enough to get to paint all three from life, while selling prints and cards in Hay castle, and chatting to visitors to the Fungitown festival last weekend #dreamjob
Brown #Roll-rim #Paxillus involutus #botanicalillustration of this poisonous #fungus illustrated from life at this year's annual #Fungitown festival in #Hayonwye. The fungus is brown with decurrent yellow gills stretching down the stipe, and a distinctive brown in-rolled wavy edge. The stipe is brown and there's detritus like soil and dead grass at the base. Cut to white, #watercolour #illustration#Echinoderma hystrix #Fungus illustrated from life at this year's annual #Fungitown festival in #Hayonwye. This beautiful little white fungus does not have an English name. It is covered all over in brownish black scales, including on the stipe. There are small dark red blobs where the white gills touch the cap edge, these are fluid produced in a process called #gutteration. Cut-to-white #sciart #naturalhistoryillustration done in #watercolor #naturalhistoryillustration #Scaberstalk #Bolete #Leccinum cyanobasaileucum #naturalhistoryillustration completed at Fungitown in Hay on wye. It has a very domed dark brown cap, a textured stipe (with soil at the base) and pale spongy hymeium. The #naturalscienceillustration shows slug damage on the cap where pale flesh shows through the brown colouration. Cut to white and illustrated #byhand

Latest commission has been received so I can post it now. Flying With The Wind, acrylic on panel. A delight to work on, this was commissioned as a birthday gift for a dear friend.
Painting of a two-masted schooner sailing quickly in a choppy sea. She has gannet wings for sails. Based on a wonderful sailing trip with the recipient and on my brother’s explanations about how the sails of his boat act as airfoils

Respectfully submitted for your approval of #BlueSkyArtshow #Art #fineart #traditionalart #fineartgallery #sciart the final completion of “Defiance” alt text for visually impaired, and a personal statement. As always ☮️💕😃⚧️
This is “Defiance” Loxodanta Africana (African Bush Elephant). The Elephant stands right in front of the viewer. It is a Vigilante Matriarch who understands and accepts her duty and authority of her Matriarchal position. She stands on the African Bushland in Defiance of any intruders that would harm herself, but most importantly and foremost others in her Herd. The Bushland recedes into the distance behind her. Trees of the Bushland are minimal compared to her massive and majestic stance. The Sky is a vibrant clear Blue representing clearness of though and understanding. A HIGHLY INTELLIGENT beautiful being.

This is what Leadership is really about. It is about accepting your duties and performing them honestly and dutifully. It is not about taking advantage of others who are less than, physically, emotionally or economically. She represents for me my own personal feelings about what I need to do to protect OUR Democracy and privileges that come with Democracy. I Shall Forver Remain absolutely Defiant of Fascism, Racism and any Theocratic Government. YOU WILL NOT GET AROUND ME YOU MUST GO THROUGH ME FIRST 😡

Today’s #SciArtSeptember prompt is the colour saffron which made me think of a particular yellow-orange mushroom. This is a hand-carved lino block reduction print of a clump of poisonous, Eastern jack-o-lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens) on a hardwood tree stump. 🧪
As described this is my 8” x 10” linocut reduction print of a clump of several Eastern jack-o-lantern mushrooms in yellow-orange with glow-in-the-dark gills against a decaying tree stump with textured bark in grey, brown and black, and ground with dead leaves with green in a corner of the background. The print is signed and numbered by me, Ele Willoughby, 2024.
