Hello! I love reading & writing about supernatural horror, science fiction, and fantasy. My favorite stories are about normal people in wild situations, wild people in normal situations, or just all-around madness.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I watched Predator (1987) for the first time (I’m thinking about using it as a comp to pitch a short scifi I’m writing - Predator x high school prom), and it holds up really well. There’s also a lot more explosions than I anticipated. Like the budget was 80% explosions.

People keep asking me if I use AI to make writing easier. And I keep telling them: I do not want it to be easier. Whenever I have done any good work, it's because I either thought about it a LOT or I have inadvertently spent ten years thinking about it so it comes easy. The thinking is the point.

What a great piece by Cory Doctorow on writing and education and AI use among students. This struck a clear bell:
Snip from quote-posted link: Which brings me back to that faculty discussion at Cornell, where we learned first that students want to learn, but are afraid of failure; and then heard from the freshman comp teacher, who told us that virtually all of their students cheated on their assignments, getting chatbots to shit out their papers.

And that's what I've been thinking about since September. Because of course those students cheat on their writing assignments – they are being taught to hit mechanical marks with their writing, improving their sentence structure, spelling and punctuation. What they're not learning is how to use writing to order and hone their thoughts, or to improve their ability to express those thoughts. They're being asked to write like a chatbot – why wouldn't they use a chatbot?

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write." A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption. B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.
