Don't worry we're just a broke city shelling out $13 million in cop cars for our no-cost, car-free Olympics
A ‘no-cost Olympics’ could turn into a ‘very expensive Olympics’ due to LAPD vehicle requests, an LA council member says

The LA City Council signed off today on authorizing $13 million in debt to finance 107 LAPD vehicles to use for the 2028 Olympics, but Council member Eunisses Hernandez said this could be the start of potentially more costs for the city, amounting to as much as $44 million, despite the Games initially being advertised as being no-cost for taxpayers.

Hernandez, who was one of three council members who opposed authorizing the $13 million in vehicle financing today, said it could just be the first of several expenditures that could turn “a no-cost Olympics” into a “very expensive Olympics.”

“You cannot tell Angelenos you are getting a no-cost Olympics, then come back expense-by-expense, and tell us the city has to pay because the Olympics are coming,” Hernandez said, before urging all of her colleagues to reject saddling themselves with the $13 million in debt. All of the council members present ended up voting to move ahead with it, with the exception of Hernandez, Ysabel Jurado and Nithya Raman. Council members Bob Blumenfield, John Lee, Monica Rodriguez and Hugo Soto-Martinez were absent for the vote.

This is where the production constraints come in. Even if YIMBYs were completely right about zoning "deregulation" leading to an explosion of housing growth, relying on this mechanism to *regulate rents* is very unattractive beyond a certain level of insensitivity.

Great read: a historian’s deconstruction of the voices ingested by various LLM—and the assumptions baked into these tools about the interests of their intended audience. “AI shunts aside problems of how knowledge is formed and communicated;” the author illustrates why we can’t afford to accept that.

Saipan was crumbling." Gemini Pro's diarist wrote of the "constant thunder of 16-inch naval guns that 'ripped into the landscape.'" These phrases belong to the language of American military history. A Japanese resident of Saipan would not have known the size of U.S. naval guns, and she would not have seen the horizon fill with ships if she were hiding in a cave. Terms like
"impregnable," "plastered," and "ripped into the landscape" (purportedly quoted directly from the diary) suggest the vantage point of the side firing, not of a civilian seeking refuge from the attack.hnn.us
straightforward ego-documents. In
"guessing" the answers to historical questions, AI shunts aside problems of how knowledge is formed and communicated.
The chatbots also entirely missed the possibility that the author might have been writing from a position (both geographical and ideological) other than the one that most English-language internet users would be likely to seek. In this sense,
