Conceptually, fucks. Makes me think of an alternate history where shotguns became the dominant weapons and an underslung centerfire rifle would be a tactical niche accessory.

I was just checking that out too. I played it a lot back in the day. Looks like the Armagetron Advanced fork is still going strong in 2026 too, which is *wild*

Jonathan Ross killed Renee Good. The ICE coward who shot Renee Good was named Jonathan Ross. Jonathan Ross is a murderer. Jonathan Ross killed an innocent civilian in order to punish Americans for being in the country and not being near his skin tone. Jonathan Ross is a racist fascist murderer.

I do want to point out people have been aware of this (or at least the possibility) for at least a decade. It's a big part of why I decided to never get into these games.

I dunno. The way he showed it working in the video had an extremely small ledge for interfacing with the safety. Seems too precise for stamping. Maybe with some more design iteration though.

Always hated that criticism. Makes me want to ask the person spouting it when was the last time they trained against a target that shot back.

We already have that data. The answer is handguns, which account for 87% of firearm murders (about 10,233 people in 2024 if you extrapolate the "unknown firearm" category) Rifles historically account for about 5% of firearm murders, which is about on par with "personal weapons" (hands & feet).

That's actually what happened in this case it seems. * Chud called a black person a name, the victim punched back. * Chud tried to draw a gun in "self defense". * Chud negligently shot himself, goes to hospital and charged with attempted murder.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I'm taking the Game Design Workshop while at GDC, and it's a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, I'm being asked to think about game types that I wouldn't actually...

This might be a long shot, but does anyone have a working link to learn more about the GDC workshop mentioned in the associated PA news post? I found the original game-ism blog archived, but it didn't have much more detail. web.archive.org/web/20080827...

I've watched videos of people trying this, and unfortunately it's less useful than it seems. Makes carrying a heavier gun easier on the arms, but reduces the amount of other gear you can pack, doesn't help with recoil control, and makes the user a lot less agile in unusual shooting positions.

I find that movie fascinating. Its bad but you can tell the people making it thought they were COOKING. And I have to admit they kinda were... just in the wrong genre. It would have gone pretty hard if it leaned into the dystopian sci-fantasy rather than anachronistic historical fantasy.

We've reached the point where one party has so obliterated the rule of law that everyone else continuing to abide by it will only hasten the end of our democracy. That's a recipe for chaos and violence. It's terrifying, and I don't know what we do about it.

I think because if you set fantasy in a different era or tech level it tends to become a different genre. Modern era/tech = Urban Fantasy Advanced era/tech = SciFi I'm sure there's counter-examples of course (the movie Reign of Fire is basically a knights and dragons story, set in the modern era)

There are text and image models trained only on ethical datasets, that can run on a (beefy) desktop computer. That's basically the same environmental impact as playing a videogame. I have no problem with someone who does that for personal enrichment and utility, as long as they use it responsibly.

As someone who was in relatively early on the ground floor of Stable Diffusion, I've felt since day 1 that "AI" tech was immensely cool until companies realized how exploitable it was and decided to burn the planet trying to do so.

Re: the current moment Perhaps a big disconnect comes from the gap between "people who can see through the hype and are assessing utility in a post-hype environment" and "people who know how dangerous the hype is precisely because being able to see through it is actually pretty rare in humans"

There's also to my recollection, at least a handful of episodes where people DO get way to into their holodeck sims and need to be pulled back to reality, so it's addressed in-universe as a known hazard.

In Star Trek's defense: by that time they have actual artificial intelligence instead of just fancy autocomplete, and the energy costs/environmental impacts are basically negated. All that's left is ensuring people are educated to understand that holodecks are simulations, not reality.

LLMs were intentionally trained on relatively well-formed datasets, so LLMs mostly sound like statistically-average well-formed writing. Unfortunately, people without their own writing style tend to imitate what they read, so AI users are starting to imitate ChatGPT. The cart is becoming the horse.

One more thing on the Harry Potter discourse. I think we should examine J.K. Rowling as a case of someone who started out good and went bad. She had empathy for people on the margins of society, for the outsiders, for the systemically oppressed, and then lost it. What can we learn from that?

Google tries to give results it thinks you'll like. So if your past clicks have taught Google what politics you engage with, it'll give you results that align with the same. At the very bottom of the search page, click "search again without personalization" to see results outside your "bubble".

It changes the search type from "All" (what Google thinks will be useful) to "Web" (only actual web pages, no comparisons or summaries). In my experience it doesn't always meaningfully change the actual search results (which may still be AI generated pages) but it does cut down the noise.

A fluffy bunny, pink with green spots. And green antlers, so a pink, fluffy jackalope. Also with five shiny purple eyes of various sizes. And where a bunny might have bunny legs here we see dangling, curly little pink striped tentacles as our guy hovers just above a flat surface. And hanging by a chain around the bunbun’s neck is a black shield shaped emblem studded with sparkly white stones spelling out ‘Maybe it will happen today’.
