I'm sipping gazpacho from a mug during the day to stay sane. Dutch heat is relentless, it feels so much hotter than it is. 2kg of local cherries in the fridge. Naked oats with fried finely sliced onion, bacon and peppers. Young broad beans, briefly boiled. Olive oil, lemon juice, feta.

Ages ago @toonspin.nl joked that his friend with an onion allergy would die even coming near my house. Every time I do something like this it still pops up in my mind and makes me laugh. 😂 8 onions gently frying, batch cooking sauces for the freezer.

Just FYI there’s an account on here called @redditspaceviewes.bsky.social (with over 200k followers) that is posting a bunch of AI slop (including a “Saturn polar hexagon” with 8 sides) and claiming it’s NASA imagery. If you see anything posted by them, it’s likely fake.

I don't dare truly rejoice yet, but I have the feeling that after months my immunosuppressants finally started working. My appetite is returning with a vengance and I plan on making good use of it. Afternoon snack - banana pancakes, bacon, maple syrup. 😁

Sometimes you find things that just hit the spot. Got rye sourdough with nuts and raisins, and amazing fenugreek cheese from an organic farm. Bit of butter and the combination is just... man. Someone take this away from me, I need to stop eating!

Funeral is behind us. Almost emptied out the house yesterday. I slept on mum's bed, which is now mine. For the first time in a long time I'm having coffee in bed, listening to music, cookbook on my lap. Finally have time to enjoy the lovely chocolates @yvdutchpagan.bsky.social gave me. Small steps.

Reading Samin Nosrat's sophisticated jab at Jane Grigson during my morning coffee and I'm all here for it. 😂 Beetroot, my beloved.

The poor, belittled beetroot. Even British food writer and documented vegetable lover Jane Grigson besmirches its name in her Vegetable Book, an ode to produce. In the span of three sentences, she maligns it repeatedly, declaring, "It is not an inspiring vegetable." Then, it is "far too bossy a vegetable. I have never heard anyone claim it as their favourite." I wonder if Jane had such a hairy relationship with beetroot because her preferred cooking method involved leaving them in the oven for 3 to 4 hours? If I cooked them that long, I'd probably detest them, too.

Saw a cookbook I was interested in was on sale for €35 (from €56). Saved myself the money on time by learning it uses cups and spoons only instead of weight. How can you call something science and then use cups without alternatives? 😑

Brought a cookbook from the library to check out. Hashtags in writing. 'Classic English shepherd's pie' - beef mince. Chicken ragu (white kind, filling for vol-au-vents) - chicken breast boiled to death in plain water and put in a sauce of cream and flour. I don't think I need to read the rest.

As well as the brilliant writing and evocative stories in Anna Ansari's new book, Silk Roads, the recipes are fabulous too. Kicked things off by making a dish of Uyghur ziran doufu (cumin tofu), and loved its aromatic spices and kick of heat against the crispy tofu cubes. Can't wait to try again! 🔥

I've grown a pink and a yellow lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) for a couple of years on the same trellis. I've been looking for hybrids made by local pollinators transferring pollen, but I wasn't expecting to find a new mutation.
