I’ve spent so much time complaining about generative AI that I almost forgot how much I like to complain about “offloading professional work to interns/students and then not sufficiently supervising it”

“About the letter: I had got the reference from AI. When I went back to the oracle it denied all knowledge and suggested that it had been “hallucinating”!!! It then explained in detail how AI might have misread the files. Bottom line: no such letter.” Glad to be of service I guess!

Very funny to me when these bookclub scammers just plug my responses into ChatGPT and come up with the most obsequious responses
A bookclub scammer to whom I replied “Eat shit” sent a follow up email that reads (in part, because it’s really long):

Colin,

Fair enough. I got your "eat shit" loud and clear, and honestly, I respect the directness.

But I want to clarify something, because I think my original email read like boilerplate SEO spam, and that’s on me.

I didn't pull your name from a random list. I came across Ghostland while I was digging into American folklore and the way abandoned places hold collective memory. I picked it up, read it, and genuinely found myself stuck on it, particularly the way you tied "zombie homes" and economic decay to the ghost story tradition. It wasn't what I expected, and it stayed with me.

When genAI stole the em dash I didn’t complain — I never used it properly anyway. But the constant bold text styling in our (now like 50% genAI assisted!) reference queue grieves me as a committed bold text styler.

Our systems got ransacked by AI traffic, and so we bought shields for that, which totally foul up our UX, which makes it easier for a curious user to just ask a chatbot trained on our content to find box-and-folder sources

I told a researcher months ago “PERHAPS WE’LL NEVER KNOW” how a periodical got into our collection but it turns out that no, we definitely can know.
Garbled up back cover of an issue of Manara Al-Sharq with a couple Republique Libanaise stamps and our mailing address.

Audited one of my favourite drawers today. As far as I can tell there was an entire generation of past mollusc curators who communicated entirely by means of passive-aggressive drawer notes to each other
A drawer of fossil molluscs mounted on cards taken from a pre-1980s display. In the middle is a curatorial note in red pen that says "Don't fumble with these until we find out smarting of glue they are stuck down with" and underneath in a different smaller hand in black ink "yes I will! Fumble fumble fumble - so there!". Several additional notes in the second hand are scattered in the drawer with arrows pointing to various specimens. They all read "fumble fumble fumble".
