Greeted this half-erased “INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY TEACH-IN HAPPENING NOW” whiteboard with a sad-face react.

Our coffeemaker’s carafe exploded this morning and I’m being punished for it twice. The campus coffee is mediocre even before you sip it through hot wet cardboard.

I told a researcher months ago “PERHAPS WE’LL NEVER KNOW” how a periodical got into our collection but it turns out that no, we definitely can know.
Garbled up back cover of an issue of Manara Al-Sharq with a couple Republique Libanaise stamps and our mailing address.

Great garbage email this AM with an entirely superfluous mention of genAI. Yeah, Alexey, I figured that part out before para 2.
Detail from a nonsense sales message:

Dear Ms. Goodman,
Your RBMS Outreach Subcommittee panel description asked what librarians can do with a box of engraved steel plates when they aren't a puppeteer — and I have to admit, that line was written almost for the book I'm about to describe.

It’s the greatest day of the year: ENGLISH MAJORS COLLOQUIUM DAY!!!! The first half is material text stations: typecasting/setting, substrates, imposition 😍😍😍, illustration technologies, and signs of use. Then we make books but I’ll be too busy bansheeing to document that…

Last semester Art History students put together an (awesome!) exhibit on the history of McCabe Library and with @shannonmattern.bsky.social here this afternoon I thought it fitting to take one last lunch in this Original Library Chair (TM)
The bright blue upholstered armchair where I am currently sitting, with a nice little MCM side table and lamp to bootStudent’s object label: “FURNISHING AND DECOR
Original Library Chair
Ca. 1967
Furnishings original to the building can be found throughout McCabe Library; these include the carrels and large wood-top tables with metal legs, which were acquired through the office of Vincent Kling. Incremental modernization has slowly pushed some of the less widespread designs, such as this bright blue topaz chair, off the main floors and into the back offices of McCabe. The original library utilized bright colors to offset the neutral tones of the interior stone walls, and this chair similarly combined the natural tones of its polished wooden structure with its jewel-toned upholstery. The type and number of chairs in McCabe was a frequent topic of discussion during planning, with arguments ranging from 329 to 600 chairs divided into carrel, table, and lounge spaces.
Wide consensus seemed to place lounge seating at a maximum of 10% of the library's seating capacity in order to encourage the academic usage of the building (perhaps contributing to McCabe's nickname of the "Fort Knox of Knowledge") and discourage slovenly behavior.”

I love library books too but please keep your lips to yourself. (First edition, first printing of The New Negro (1925), in library binding with plenty of highlighter and thankfully not as many kisses)
Detail from Alain Locke’s “The New Negro” essay in the 1925 volume of the same name. The whole bottom of the page is highlighted in orange, with a very pink lipstick kiss.
