Happy ten year anniversary of the 2016 blackout in South Australia. I was told that as clean power grew in Aus, we'd see a blackout apocalypse. The chart below shows blackouts for generation shortfall as columns, and renewable proportion as a percent of the eastern grid. Enjoy :)

It is critical to understand how difficult it can be to remove the use of a computer program once a dependency on it has been created or normalized. The sale of many computer programs relies on the buyer or user not thinking this far out in time. lesscomputer.ca/computer-care/

Once again blown away by the production design for @boontavista.com
A darkened warehouse, lit like a Refn movie. A crowd of people sit waiting for a podcast recording to begin. The hosts of Boonta Vista are seated in the Drive-like space. Theo is decked out in leather. The vibe is anticipatory. The audience is engaged.

I think the best way to think about the Omarchy stuff is not a bunch of companies donating millions of dollars to a Linux dotfiles project. It’s a bunch of companies donating money to a political advocacy project with goals like getting minorities out of open source and eliminating the Roma.

Generally permits issued from one jurisdiction where the trip starts there are recognised in others. When I drove a Troopy from southern NSW back to Melb that’s how it worked.

Nah, you’ve actually entered the final phase of Australian; accidentally using Americanisms. Did they not cover this on the citizenship test right after the mandatory section on seasons 1-8 of The Simpsons?

Was tipped off today that Telstra isn't the first telco to have this issue it seems. www.theguardian.com/business/202...
Telstra is not the first company to encounter this issue. A telco in Jersey suffered a similar outage in 2020 that lasted hours, took out emergency call functions for some customers on the Channel island, and took nearly five days to fully recover services.
According to the investigation from that outage, the telco's time server generated the wrong date - November 2000 - nearly 20 years earlier. The incorrect date was passed onto routers in the network that then isolated themselves from the network,
"Having lost around half of the network, inherent resilience was lost which ultimately led ultimately to the outage across the entire JT network," a report found.
The significance of the date was that the system used a week counter up to 1023 weeks, and the default date went back 19.6 years - as with the Telstra issue.

Mind you if services actually are catching up on the backlog you’d expect these stats to get worse for a while. Unfortunately without stats on the waitlist size we’ll never know.

Cail Young @cail.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Oh man. Probably the stuff about they’re supposed to be shifting to a “patient centred” appointment system and explicitly forecasting likely wait times, including helping to find alternate services. This is from memory tho haven’t re read it

vahi.vic.gov.au/specialist-c... The stats are actually worse than the last time I checked. Some services are so bad that they could have trained new specialists and hired them in the time patients have been waiting. Which raises the question of why they haven’t done that?

Which means services are incentivised not to schedule anything, even years out, because it’ll tank their stats

Yeah it’s pretty shit and has been for decades. The Canadian model sounds like income protection insurance which is offered through most superannuation funds and also privately; I know the superannuation default offerings were changed relatively recently so it may not be universal any more.
