Outside chains like RegalCare transformed Mass. nursing homes. Quality fell.
RegalCare and other nursing home chains have rapidly expanded in Massachusetts. The Globe Spotlight Team found widespread problems and little state intervention.

I hate all of this. I don't know what people think students learn in these classes, but I *loved* my women's health class at UMd (as well as all my women's lit classes, esp women's science fiction/feminist science theory). Preaching to the choir, etc., but these classes were foundational for me.

I love this idea (for all the reasons in the thread) and @cambridgemass.bsky.social and @cityofsomerville.bsky.social should go in on this together because our commuting/cycling/e-bike riding populations are strongly linked. (Will it happen? Someone has to suggest it!)

Everything I'm writing comes out so f*&ing earnest. That said, it's the anniversary of 9/11 & almost Rosh Hashannah. That said, let the immigrants in your life know how much you appreciate them. (Some might be in tipping jobs, tip extra.) Same for all your trans fam/friends.

Fun list, though *obviously* I disagree with their fave round-up at the top, because *obviously* Honeycomb should have been among those. (It did get a rave review further down. Otherwise I'd doubt their reviewing.)

Many people are talking about not cutting off parents, and from two perspectives: 1) I've been on the support side of someone cut off for truly no reason other than things imagined/invented by the kid and the other parent, and it sucked, but that person waited it out and had faith it would pass. 1/

My extended fam took my mom to Whistler last week for her 80th. I planned it, and, while extremely stressful for me to plan a trip for a group of seven, ranging from an energetic 12yr-old to a mobility-impaired 80yr-old, it was a success! Some thoughts/photos:

A friend got hepatitis from going to a medical clinic in Cuba and went into a coma and had to have a liver transplant as a result. I was going to be working a pretty remote area of mexico for a couple of weeks, so I asked my doctor for the hep vaccine. Her: "Just don't have unprotected sex."

Lovely essay: "Treating others well isn’t saccharine, it is sublime... we might be battered and brittle from pandemics, elections and foreign wars, but if you can accept the fact that optimism can be a superpower, and that it’s okay to sometimes feel at peace, then Ted Lasso can be sublime."

I had a friend suggest I tell an AI all the important elements of a Gastropod episodes, feed it all the 12 years of episodes we've done, and ask what topics we should still cover. UM NO WAY IN HELL. 1) we know what we have and haven't covered. 2) we consider what has enough depth for us 3)
