Another Concord Public Library sighting--Louisa May Alcott! Just finished this fascinating book on The Emerson Circle by Bruce Nichols. Learned a ton about LMA, including how much she wrote beyond Little Women. Duly noted . . .

Great news in history of women in philosophy--new book by Alison Stone on Julia Wedgwood, whose "law of imperfect antithesis" is a fascinating alternative to mainstream ethical theory. Jane Addams birthday week final post, this time in response to the accusation that she advocated "peace at any price": "What we desire is peace at once, and a peace founded on justice and law." Here she is (3rd from left) en route to war-torn Europe in 1915, ready to argue for peace. #philsky

Jane Addams birthday week post 4! A positive vision of peace: “I believe that peace is not merely an absence of war but the nurture of human life, and that in time this nurture would do away with war as a natural process.” Nurture doing away with nature ...food for thought. #philsky #womenshistory

Jane Addams birthday week #3: a quote for the start of the school year: "We have not yet had full confidence in the wondrous things these children are learning to do. We have not yet learned to teach them as they should be taught, because we do not yet sufficiently reverence their possibilities." 👇

Jane Addams birthday week post 2: today I read that her school principal, Miss Sill, subscribed to the opinion that women should not speak in public. Addams went on to be a world-famous speaker for suffrage, pacifism, worker's rights, and immigrant rights. I hope her disobedience brought her joy!

Apologies, but I need to repost this NYT quote from Mick Jagger in which he says he is reading Kant. Since posting it, it has been pointed out to me that I missed an opportunity for not one but two . . . puns? First h/t to @ywcath.bsky.social & Hedwig: You Kant always get what you want. And...👇

I posted this a year ago to honor Melissa Hortman, who was murdered #OTD last year for her political principles. Like her, I was a #BostonUniversity #philosophy grad from Minnesota. I hope, like her, to use my philosophy to fight for justice. Thinking of her all day. #philsky #womeninphilosophy

Thanks to the great team at GASTROPOD for this wonderful conversation in which I got to do one of the things I love most--talk about Lydia Maria Child's *agricultural activism.* In a nutshell: how to fight slavery by growing beets! How I HATED beets as a child. But now . . .

Researching Black women pacifists, I found this powerful Mary Church Terrell quote. She identifies as a pacifist, then says: "But all pacifists are not cut according to the same pattern...I do not advocate peace at any price. The only kind of peace I like is one that is a just & honorable one."👇

I'm continuing to learn about Black women's internationalism . . . #OTD in 1945, Mary McLeod Bethune was the only woman of color at the UN founding conference, which she hoped would allow Black Americans become "integrated into the structure of the peace and freedom of all people everywhere.”👇

Käthe Kollwitz--sculptor, feminist, pacifist--died #OTD in 1945. It has always felt unbearably sad that she died just before the war ended. I took this picture of her "Mother with her Dead Son" in Berlin's Memorial to Victims of War and Tyranny last year. So many more victims to mourn this year.

When Rankin lost her seat after her vote against the US entry into WWI, she said: “Never for one second could I face the idea that I would send young men to be killed for no other reason than to save my seat in Congress.” Imagine that. #pacifism #UShistory @lorissa.bsky.social
