I dream of someday having the space to report on how David Eby went from telling NDP supporters BC could not afford to keep approving fossil fuel projects to being one of LNG's biggest boosters He made that shift in less than 4 years

My second article for the day is about this morning's historic BC Supreme Court ruling in favour of the founders of the Drug User Liberation Front (DULF). The judge praised DULF's work, said a safe supply is necessary to save lives, and threw out charges of drug trafficking.

Looking nationally, here's our comparison by province, from our NB report. Ontario was doing significantly better by 2022 (our latest report). All reports here. www.bchumanist.ca/saguenay

I think they were starting to take off in BC beforehand. But it definitely spread nationally after that. Eg from our own studies of municipal prayer practices, BC has gone from 2/5 cities opening inaugural meetings with LAs to >70% between 2018-22. www.bchumanist.ca/we_yelled_at...
Quote from "We yelled at them till they stopped" showing indigenous content rose from 39% in 2018 inaugural meetings to 72% in 2022.

The Angus Reid poll was likely an outlier but we've got Liaison and Leger (often S-tier pollsters) both showing a faltering NDP. Maybe it'd be great to actually present something for people to vote for sooner than later...

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

Counterpoint: Politics isn't a dirty word. It is merely the means by which people organize society. Science and evidence help us inform a better world; while anti-science positions are used to defend authoritarians and inequality. Everything is political

It's a pretty mixed record when you scroll the list. I don't think it's easy to say it automatically goes one way or the other (any more than any election). And in that case, I don't think we can say voters actually care about /how/ the election gets started. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Do they? They worked consistently for Chretien and gave Horgan a majority. Almost all elections pre-2010 were called at the PM/Premier's whim (aside from confidence votes). And most governments get re-elected at least once in this country.

Okay let's do a roundup: Adriane Carr was the party's first leader for 1983-1985, after which the position was abolished, and the party had no formal leader till 1993, instead having 3 spokespeople. Carr will return though!

The perception that red tape is preventing Canada from building major projects doesn’t hold hold up. Hundreds of projects, worth hundreds of billions of dollars are planned under existing regulations. Yet Carney blames a bureaucratic maze for stifling growth to justify his deregulatory agenda.

Jeremy Valeriote will run again in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky #bcpoli
This election, BC Greens are running on four commitments to British Columbians: A Life You Can Afford, Care You Can Count On, Economic Fairness for All, and a commitment to Fight for your Future.

Lowan also announced she would be running in Saanich North and the Islands, following Rob Botterell announcing he would not be seeking re-election.

“Serving the people of Saanich North and the Islands has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” said Botterell. “I would not be stepping aside with such confidence if I didn’t know who was stepping up. Emily Lowan is someone this community can trust, and I will be working hard to help her win.”

“Having the chance to represent Saanich North and the Islands, the same neighbourhoods in which I grew up, is a profound honour,” said Lowan. “From a lack of access to healthcare, to the instability of a housing crisis, to underfunded ferry routes, to the threats of drought & climate disaster, the people of Saanich North and the Islands deserve someone who’s willing to fight tooth and nail for them. That’s exactly what I’ll do in the Legislature.”

Jeremy Valeriote announced that he would be seeking re-election in West Vancouver-Sea-to-Sky, where he won a historic victory in 2024, becoming the first BC Green to represent a riding on the mainland.

He already burned bridges with the Greens when Furstenau was leader, then with the NDP as Eby took over. But he does seem chaotic and curmudgeonly enough to sit in caucus with Sturko

At the same time, the Greens were in bad shape after Furstenau and I feel like they're only slowly rebuilding. There's a chance they only field a half slate (they were 69/93 in 2024). So it may not even be an option for many. And then the strategic voting pressure is going to come.

Ian Bushfield @bushfield.ca · 23/09/2026
Well the NDP want to keep on... Being government I guess. The Conservatives want to repeal everything, particularly SOGI & DRIPA, and presumably cut taxes CentreBC I guess wants to do the same with Sturko in charge but maybe less overtly mean. And the Greens want to tax billionaires and ban oil

Carney is truly the Reagan of Canada. A calming, paternalistic figure in a period of apocalyptic uncertainty who galvanizes the economy with short-sighted right wing fiscal policies. And like Reagan, every disaster that Canada encounters in the future will be traceable to his administration.

The recent example is AB 2015. AB Lib leader Raj Sherman had resigned and David Swann held the role as interim leader when Prentice called the election. That destroyed the Liberals as their vote consolidated under Notley and the divided right delivered her a majority gov.

Chapman jumped to OneBC. The alliance of moderates & Cons likely pisses off both the convoy chuds & centrists. If Eby's opportunistic in calling an election, they're equally as opportunistic in everything that's happened in the past few weeks. Only one who can claim the high road here is Lowan
