I vividly remembered for years a second grade incident where I was reprimanded for stopping (quietly and briefly) at a fountain after an outdoor activity when we only had permission to use the washroom. 🙃

Canada has binding regulations on everything from guns to butter. And none for AI. Are we going to trust people like Elon Musk & Sam Altman to regulate themselves? Or is our government going to stop cheerleading & start regulating in the public interest? It’s literally what government is for.

Thanks to Doug Ford and Paul Calandra, 80,000 elementary educators have to order classroom supplies from Staples this year instead of from their school boards. I decided to do a little comparison shopping for school supplies many of us will have to order over the course of a school year. 🧵 #OntEd

Reminder that here in Canada, Carney is cutting jobs at CFIA, has given politicians the ability to override food safety rules, is allowing the use of banned pesticides, and is deferring to provinces on meat inspections. As always, receipts linked below.

"Galvez said France rejected Canadian lentils in 2025 due to residual levels of the herbicide diquat. “With respect to pesticides, the approach that is used in Europe is really precautionary,” she said." #CdnPoli
Roe said Canada already has weaker pesticide regulations than many other jurisdictions, including the European Union.

“The EU bans several pesticides that are still in use in Canada and the EU is Canada’s third largest agricultural market, so this could have real consequences for our ability to trade with countries in the EU,” she said.

“I would certainly agree that we shouldn’t be limiting the markets that we can trade food to due to lax pesticide regulations.”

An international expert in global food security is visiting Canada this week to urge officials to continue investing in agriculture, warning that the continued Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has upended supply chains in the middle of planting season in many countries.

Ismahane Elouafi, the executive managing director of the world’s largest publicly funded agricultural research network, CGIAR, said the closing of the strait is driving up the prices of oil and fertilizer, which means less productivity, higher costs for farmers and rising food prices − economic pain that will be felt a few weeks from now.
