I have to confess I can't get past the sans serif. Why would you want your novel to look like a washing-machine instruction manual? I'm curious about Cusk but this piece wouldn't encourage me to bump her up the TBR list. @john-self.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/culture/2026...

RIP Wendell Berry. I've thought about this poem. 'Our Real Work', a lot since starting on Confluence with @julietgutch It reminds me of Paul Valéry : “Une difficulté est une lumière. Une difficulté insurmontable est un soleil." : “A difficulty is a light. An insurmountable difficulty is a sun”.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do/we have come to our real work,/and that when we no longer know which way to go/we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed./The impeded stream is the one that sings

Freedom 250 sounds fun www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...
The lineup will still be amazing, though. We promise. The slot formerly occupied by a performance from the Commodores will now be filled with the sound of a lone Gadsden flag flapping on its pole. The slot formerly occupied by Milli Vanilli will be taken by a dog whistle, being blown into the microphone very loudly so that everyone winces and covers their ears. The slot formerly occupied by Bret Michaels will be taken by Stephen Miller standing silently and staring until the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and the very air around you curdles. You were holding a flower in your hand, but when you look down at the flower, it has withered. So has the hand holding it.
Your youth! Your youth! What has become of your youth? In your arms, your baby begins to cry and cry and will not be soothed.
Sometimes, at night, the baby startles awake and you know whose visage has come to cast its shadow on his dream. (Stephen is also available for birthday parties.)

President of MIT not mincing words today in @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2026/05/27/s...
So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.

Gustav Klimt was 17 years old in 1879 when he drew (with charcoal and black chalk) this portrait of a young girl. His superb technical ability as a draughtsman is evident even as a teenager in the way he uses shadow to create a three-dimensional picture on paper.

If done by UKGov, the project would get talked about for 5 years, the consultation would cost £20B then we'd end up with with a single 1 mile segment of solar panels being installed on the railtrack paid for by the taxpayer with all electricity profits privatised.
