Turnstone appreciation post ✨ Like their name suggests, Turnstones can be found flicking over seaweed fronds, pebbles and beach debris from rocky shorelines. Most individuals we see in Ireland are winter visitors who fly from their breeding grounds in Canada and Greenland. 📸 John Fox

BirdWatch Ireland's Annagh Marsh Reserve in Co. Mayo is a haven for rare and unique Irish breeding species, but, that wasn’t always the case. For the Lapwing, breeding nearly stopped completely at the site. Now, Lapwings are back.

Many migrating species we see in September are not “local” and are just passing through, like the Little Stint. Like most migrants which stray a little off course, the Little Stints that pitch down in this way are usually juveniles that have never done the journey before.

And just like that, the 2026 Country Bird Survey (CBS), has come to a close. A big thank you to the over 300 volunteers and National Parks and Wildlife Service staff took part this year. CBS is one of the most important and longest running bird surveys in Ireland, running since 1998.

We recently welcomed our new Tory Island Warden, Kyle Coughlan. Kyle is working on the PeacePlus Nature project and will be working to help safeguard breeding waders on the island. PeacePlus Nature a project supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

One morning in 2024, a Siskin was safely caught and ringed by a BWI ringer in their Wicklow garden. One year later, the same bird was caught by a ringer in Scotland, 266 km away. While not surprising in terms of distance or location, its appearance reveals a different environmental trend—
