The Kimono Gallery @roger1952.bsky.social · 15h
Originating in the late eighteenth century during the height of the Edo period, this small medicine case represents the pinnacle of Somada-zaiku (Somada lacquer work), a specialized tradition established in Etchū Province (modern Toyama Prefecture) by the artisan Somada Kiyosuke
Suspended from a rich, braided violet silk cord (kumihimo) tied with meticulous precision, this eighteenth-century inro from the Cleveland Museum of Art stands as a miniature masterpiece of Somada lacquer craft. Against a mirror-polished, jet-black lacquer ground (roiro-nuri), a slender heron (sagi) wades among delicate marsh reeds beneath the graceful, cascading fronds of a weeping willow (yanagi). The bird’s plumage and the willow leaves are brought to life through intricate inlays of iridescent green-and-violet abalone shell (raden), fringed by delicate drifts of gold foil (kirikane) and sprinkled gold dust (maki-e) that suggest mist shimmering over a moonlit riverbank. The ensemble is anchored above by a carved metallic bead (ojime) and a circular toggle (netsuke) inlaid with matching floral and rockwork motifs in iridescent nacre. The object awakens an extraordinarily refined sensory landscape: the cool, porcelain-smooth touch of polished sap and shell, the subtle, rhythmic click of interlocking wooden tiers sliding flawlessly along hidden internal cord channels (himotoshi), the faint, resinous aroma of cured urushi lacquer, and the mesmerizing flash of jewel-like color shifting across the dark surface as light catches the shell from different angles. Originating in the late eighteenth century during the height of the Edo period, this small medicine case represents the pinnacle of Somada-zaiku (Somada lacquer work), a specialized tradition established in Etchū Province (modern Toyama Prefecture) by the artisan Somada Kiyosuke. Because traditional Japanese clothing lacked pockets, wealthy merchants (chōnin) and samurai wore inro suspended from the obi (sash), where they served as functional containers for seal paste and medicine as well as vital badges of personal taste (suki) and status.

Today is #WorldOctopusDay 🐙 Did you know that octopuses have blue blood? This graphic looks at what makes it blue, as well as other blood colours seen in different organisms: wp.me/p4aPLT-Fc #ChemSky 🧪
Infographic on the chemistry of the colours of blood. Human blood is red due to haemoglobin, which is also red when deoxygenated - not blue! Spiders, crustaceans, and molluscs including octopuses and squid have blue blood due to haemocyanin, which contains copper instead of iron. When deoxygenated, haemocyanin is colourless. Some segmented worms, some leeches and some marines worms have green blood due to chlorocruorin, which is light green when deoxygenated. Marine worms including peanut worms, penis worms and brachiopods have purple blood due to haemerythrin, which is colourless when deoxygenated.

The Kimono Gallery @roger1952.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Traditional Okinawa dance. The kimonos here are very different than in the main Japanese islands to the north. This performance captures the distinct cultural lineage of Ryūkyū Buyō (classical Okinawan dance), a courtly art form nurtured under the sovereign Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th thru 19th c
Poised in deliberate, fluid motion upon a sun-dappled courtyard path, a classical Ryukyuan dancer performs Yotsudake, her body draped in a radiant, golden-yellow bingata robe patterned with cascading tropical flora, waves, and cloud scrolls. She wears the iconic hanagasa—a monumental, flower-shaped headpiece constructed with overlapping crimson petals rimmed in brilliant cobalt blue wave motifs, echoing the bloom of a hibiscus or lotus floating over the sea. Unbound by the heavy, constricting obi sashes of mainland Honshu, her kimono flows with uninhibited maritime freedom, its wide sleeves lined in shocking scarlet silk that flashes with every turn of her wrists. In her hands, she clicks small, tassel-adorned bamboo castanets (yotsudake), anchoring her graceful steps in a precise, hypnotic rhythm. The scene radiates a vivid sensory atmosphere: the sharp, metallic-like clack-clack of polished bamboo echoing through warm coastal air, the gentle rustle of starch-finished silk and ramie fibers, the faint, salty tang of a Pacific breeze mingling with garden fragrance, and the dazzling intensity of southern sunlight illuminating saturated, pigment-dyed textile motifs.
ormed at the crossroads of East Asian maritime trade routes, Ryukyuan court culture synthesized artistic influences from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia to forge a unique aesthetic identity. The dance Yotsudake was historically showcased during grand state banquets (ukawansen) held at Shuri Castle to entertain visiting Chinese imperial envoys (sapposhi). The dancer’s brilliant yellow robe showcases bingata, Okinawa's premier stencil-dyeing technique where mineral pigments and plant dyes are applied over rice-paste resists; during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, rich yellow grounds were strictly reserved for the royal family and high nobility.

A post from Pope Leo XIV:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
