#Botany2026 swing by the DEI table during the poster session tonight to chat with us ( @brythebotanist.bsky.social Caroline Brose) and snag some #DisabledInBotany tattoo-styled stickers and fidget spinners!!!!
Two stacks of two types of stickers. The first is of a monstera plant growing from an orange pill bottle that says on the prescription “Disabled in Botany” and three pills are placed outside of it (a yellow and blue one and two white and red ones). The second sticker is in a traditional sailor-style banner/ribbon tattoo with roses and leaves that says “Disabled in Botany”. Five differently coloured cube fidget spinners: pink and orange, black and red, green and magenta, purple and blue, and purple. They have a chromatic sheen to them.

Ecological change may be a common initiator of evolutionary pollinator shifts Agnes S. Dellinger @the-kunsze.bsky.social nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Hypothesized scenario for how ecological change (sensu Stebbins, 1970) may initiate evolutionary pollinator shifts, using colonization of novel environments with altered pollinator communities as stand-in for ecological change, and shifts from bee to hummingbird pollination as example for evolutionary pollinator shifts.

#Flower color variation in Digitalis purpurea: #Pollination & soil influences across native & introduced populations New #AJB research by @slozadagobilard.bsky.social, Pamela Espinoza Peñaloza, Giovanni Pascucci, Zainab Aliwi et al. doi.org/10.1002/ajb2... #botany #plantscience #bumblebees
Flower color variation in Digitalis purpurea comprised violet, pink, and white morphs that were distinguishable in bee vision, whereas the inner nectar guides remained largely conserved across morphs, potentially limiting pollinator discrimination. Bumblebees were the main pollinators in all populations, but visitation patterns were population-specific, and morph frequencies were not associated with soil composition despite regional differences; only soil phosphorus was slightly lower beneath violet individuals. Reproductive fitness varied among populations but not consistently among color morphs, indicating that floral color variation is not driven by pollinators or soil conditions and is more likely maintained by local or neutral processes.

This paper is a great for teaching phylogenetic trees. "Ancient DNA reveals elephant birds and kiwi are sister taxa and clarifies ratite bird evolution" Clearly written. It discusses hypotheses of relatedness among species via continental drift vs genetic data. 🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
A figure depicting continental drift from when Gondwana existed to present day, with continents and countries colored according to the ratite species that occur or occurred on them. Next to that is a cartoon of a phylogeny that we would expect support for if continental drift explained patterns of species occurrence and relatedness. And next to that is a cartoon of the phylogeny supported by the genetic data presented in this paper, which demonstrates that closely related species must have traveled great distances after Gondwana broke up, after which flightlessness evolved, and that this happened more than once.
