In 2003, the U.S. military bombed Iraq’s national seed bank in Abu Ghraib, effectively eliminating hundreds of varieties of indigenous seeds adapted to growing in the drought-prone desert climate. A year later, U.S. law prohibited Iraqi farmers from seed saving. (First published in 2025 by Prism)

Every now & then we get a paper that argues preventing ecosystem degradation is more effective - in terms of cost &/or ecological benefits - than restoring ecosystems This is so obvious; why is it seen as debatable? But it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t put effort into restoring degraded ecosystems

🌱 We are SO close! A Day for BSA has raised $13,200 of our $15,000 Endowment goal, & today is the final day to give. Just $1,800 to go! From our Board (100% of whom gave!) to members worldwide, this campaign belongs to all of us. YOUR Journey — OUR Story. Give today: day-for-bsa.botany.org/2026
A Day for BSA fundraising progress graphic. Bold white text at the top reads "WE ARE SO CLOSE!" Below is a circular progress meter, now nearly full, marked with milestones at $3,750, $7,500, $11,250, and $15,000, with the A Day for BSA logo (August 27, 2026) at its center. A yellow arrow points to the current total: $13,200. To the right, in yellow handwritten-style script, is a call to action: "Give Today!" Beneath the meter, large white text reads "Today is the final day of our Endowment campaign!" At the bottom, the campaign tagline "YOUR Journey — OUR Story" sits above the web address www.Day-for-BSA.botany.org/2026.

We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.
