Turns out I got busy and forgot about posting for a while! Have a beetle! Lucanus capreolus, the reddish-brown stag beetle (love some accurate description), is commonly found in the eastern US. Watercolor, first time using the good arches paper, and wow, what a difference. Plants to come soon :)

I love unexpected natural history! I noticed my Penstemon were trapping flies on their inflorescences, looked it up, and found that someone who appeared to have done a PhD in retirement wrote a whole dissertation on this and used radioactive fruit flies to show N/P transfer from flies to the seeds!🌍
Photo of horticultural variety of Penstemon digitalis in my back yard. Each flower has 1-5 tiny flies trapped by hairs on the outside of the pale pink inflorescences.Screenshot of dissertation title page "The function of insect-trapping by Penstemon digitalis and Cirsium discolor" by Patricia Ann Thomas, who notably received her BS in 1950, MD in 1953, and submitted this dissertation to the Dep of EEB at UIUC in 1988.Screenshot of a section of the dissertation abstract. My highlighted passages read "studies using radioactive fruit flies revealed digestion, uptake, and transport of nutrients from fruit flies on the sticky traps" and "The amounts of N and P in the captured insects were sufficient to supply most (80-100%) of the N and P in the seeds of P. digitalis"
