If Budweiser was trying to identify individual alcoholics and send them personalized "Chuck, you haven't had a drink in a while, here's a free case on us" ads we would rightfully call for them to be drawn and quartered

Henry’s essay on the state of tech—and of tech work, and of tech workers—is very good. It’s hopeful, painful, and beautiful all at once, and I think it’s worth your time.

Following the Pope’s encyclical about AI, you’re going to see a lot more religious intervention in shaping public opinion about tech companies. There are only two social institutions resilient enough to counter AI politically — states and religion. They bought the first. Standby on the second.

Based on all of the organizations we've worked with, I think regardless of technology or tools, it's often difficult for organizations to identify their most valuable members because of organizational biases and politics that reward and protect mediocre and toxic individuals, often unintentionally.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

Cornell asked employers what’s wrong with college grads. The issue wasn’t technical knowledge but handling ambiguity, conflict, compromise & feedback. AI may make these “soft skills” more valuable. You can teach domain knowledge but it’s harder to teach motivation or how to work with others.

The sunny side of this delusion is the computer gives you a flying car and makes it so you don't have to work. The blackpill one is that it wipes us out via some cinematic method TBD. Two futures you don't actually have to live in. Both are abdications, and embarrassingly childish on their face.
