“Genuinely shared” Nothing has been less genuine in the history of sharing things.
Today was a great opportunity to share our love of reading and books, something that was genuinely shared by every Minister we met, and to talk about our experience starting and scaling a business in New Zealand.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

In this case the marketing manager will wrangle them into submission but as a trend it’s bleak. It used to be the mythical nephew who could do the job better and cheaper. Now that mythical nephew exists in AI and it’s not better but the people using it can’t see that. It’s a tsunami of blandness.

And because they don’t understand messaging, or design, or marketing, they don’t know that what they’re pushing is horrible. It’s now their darling idea, given life. Look at that funky font! Look at that cartoon art style! Yeah bro, it’s the same shit that’s everywhere. The world is drowning in it.

Bruce Buckman @brucebuckman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Now that email comes with a whole bunch of their ideas transformed into ‘art’ by AI. And making bad ideas manifest as bad art makes them hold on to those ideas more strongly. Now your own designer’s original work is being judged against bad AI that someone thinks is wonderful.
180
Bruce Buckman @brucebuckman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Previously those ideas would be an email and because they can’t implement those ideas themselves you can talk them out of it. It’s not their job, they’re not going to waste lots of time arguing about it. You move on. But now we’re in the age of AI slop. Oh boy.
140
Bruce Buckman @brucebuckman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Now in these scenarios there are always multiple ‘stakeholders’ outside of marketing who get to have their say. Often their feedback is fine, a different viewpoint you hadn’t thought of. Sometimes it’s less helpful - twee or stupid ideas from folks who don’t understand marketing.

Bruce Buckman @brucebuckman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
So today I came across a really annoying side effect of the AI slop era. A client needs some fun-but-still-on-brand stickers created for laptops. This is the kind of thing where normally you work with the marketing manager, to-and-fro, do design iterations, until you dial it in.

Reducing the tax take and reducing both government spending and the size of government is basically a vote for taking money out of the economy. It’s so weird how so many people seem to just accept that it in fact will benefit the economy. 🤷‍♂️
