Let this sink in. Cornell University refused to refund Jane Doe's tuition the semester she was raped. Without this money, she could not transfer to another school. Essentially, she was forced to stay on campus where she saw those seven rapists frequently. Eventually she dropped out of college.

fish are friends
Stop using anti-fish language
Instead of: this seems fishy
Try saying:
this seems like a situation in which we should consult the wisdom and grace of the European seabass, a species with which i would entrust my entire life and personal safety

One of the big drivers of the Choosin Texas discourse is that it’s no longer enough for people to accept something exists and be okay with that, you have to actively affirm its greatness. Saying you don’t like it is the greatest sin of all. You gotta grow up if that’s how you’re gonna act.

The article spends a quarter of the article suggesting really valid reasons why someone (me) may not have heard the song but doubles down on saying it's because we're smug instead of just acknowledging that the song of the summer as a concept is dead now

What Some Folks Really Mean When They Claim to Have Never Heard 'Choosin' Texas'
Claiming to have never heard Ella Langley's record-setting country song 'Choosin' Texas' is similar to saying, 'I listen to anything but country.'

In the end, I think this article could have been more interesting about music segmentation if it hadn't been so much about validating the author's artistic and cultural preferences.

Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
I will also "claim" to have never heard of "Choosin' Texas" or the singer, Ella Langley, before reading this article. That claim happens to be true. I don't listen to much Top 40 radio. I mostly listen to streaming music and SiriusXM satellite. That's not me consciously disdaining country music.
52514
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
That's not to say that country music is bad! If you like it, great! But I don't think of my family as having been any less working-class because we didn't listen to it.
22073
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
Again, there's the implication that working-class must equal white. On top that, country music isn't necessarily more popular among white working-class people, depending on where they live. I grew up in a working-class household and we never listened to country music. We just didn't care for it.
432013
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
Furthermore, I object to the flattening of working-class cultures in America in article, as if to say that listening to country music is a definitive characteristic of being working-class.
734016
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
For one thing, as others on Bluesky have pointed out, what's going on is not just a reflection of class, but also of race, which the author ignores.
228911
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
I find the author's implication that not having heard of the song, or not listening to country music in general, indicates cultural snobbery on the part of people who want to disdain rural or working-class people, to be rather underdeveloped, to put it mildly.
331213
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
The author does point out that in an era of streaming music, it's much easier to curate what music one listens to, but seems to think that that's an unhealthy siloing of taste.
11976
Brian Schefke @handle.invalid · 27/09/2026
The main idea of the article appears to be that although the song is very popular and set a record for weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, people "claiming" not to have heard of the song or the artist are making a cultural statement of middle-class identity.
