Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Someone else though, running the same edition but who always ends the session with a boss fight, they probably are running a combat game. "X-rated" is slightly different though. The convention is that one x-rated scene makes the whole thing x-rated. Just look at Mass Effect. 110
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I think it comes down to the things which are definitely going to feature in a session of play. If your D&D sessions always feature torches, traps and negotiations, but only sometimes combat, then it probably isn't a combat game. 110
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I've done exactly that a bunch of times and killed a procedure or an entire system because I hadn't left enough room for the roleplay part of my rpg. 020
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026If they are ditching the idea for great of someone else saying "that's too boardgamey," then yes, that did m sucks. If however they have made a set of rules which they feel is more like a boardgame than an RPG, and that's not what they wanted, then it makes perfect sense to drop that thread. 120

Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I have been told so many times that if I am not following the rules of my rpg, then it's not a game, but nobody has ever explained why this matters. I'm definitely still playing an RPG, so maybe "game" was never the right word. 130
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Yep and people use the word game for all sorts of things and it is not helpful. If play is a game, then how can a book also be a game? Are the rules a game? If everyone who plays an RPG is playing the same game, then why is everyone's play so different? Why do we all have different goals? 120
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026If that isn't an X-rated game, then D&D isn't a combat game. This is the problem with thinking that the games is in the books. The game was never the books, it is always in the play. What you have there is instructions for playing an X-rated game. 130
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I definitely see them as play. I see the components of an RPG as toys and tools which we use to create games with. 120

Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I think the *WN games are really good for open tables because they are versatile systems but they are also not complicated and they will be familiar to anyone who has ever played D&D or anything similar like Mass Effect. 030

Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The Things Without Number line is a good call. In my experience casual players don't really care what system you are using unless they were expecting D&D. 110
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Honestly I don't like thinking about RPGs in terms of game loops. I don't like thinking of RPGs as games. 130
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I've felt this myself with overly detailed combat systems (5e), clocks in Blades, travel in TOR, skills in Gumshoe... Fate. I think I just find very attracted systems "boardgamey". But importantly, that's not really a criticism of the RPG, it's just me saying it's not for me. 240
Brian Ashford @brianbloodaxe.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Yeah calling an RPG a boardgame is silly. I do have some sympathy for when people find particular RPGs "too boardgamey" though. Sometimes you want to roleplay in character but instead you are spending all your time on mechanics feeding into other mechanics... Like a boardgame. 130
