Jeffrey Archer's death reminds me of the time he told a really boring story while a guest on Dame Edna's show. "Marvellous" said Edna after it petered out to its conclusion, "and I'm sure that'll make a wonderful anecdote someday".

There's somehow a new Jackie Evans EP. Lots of it is 'alternative versions' of previously released songs but it does contain two new ones: Anything You Wanted and (the utterly tremendous) End of the World. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGIg...

I wrote a big sci-fi adventure series with a cast of diverse, surprising characters to fall in love with, plot twists and jokes. Half is set in apocalyptic Yorkshire with big dangerous robots on the prowl. The other half is set inside a very unusual kind of cyberspace. rustyquill.com/show/rez-high/

I've seen at least one episode of 95 of the shows on that list. It's not hard to watch one of lots of things if you're interested in these things, I suppose. I might personally find it tricky watch even a minute more of a few of them.

Britain doesn't change. I'm rereading Holmes. It's 1887 and the Daily Telegraph speculates that a murder must have been perpetrated by refugees or socialists, and advocates a closer watch over foreigners, while the Standard blames such outrages on a liberal government. I had cause to discuss this brilliant thing today. Captain America has a few important things to say about America, as written by Peter B. Gillis (author of my beloved Tailgunner Jo comics).

Listen to me — all of you out there! You were told by this man — your hero — that America is the greatest country in the world! He told you that Americans were the greatest people — that America could be refined like silver, could have the impurities hammered out of it, and shine more brightly! He went on about how precious America was — how you needed to make sure it remained great! And he told you anything was justified to preserve that great treasure, that pearl of great price that is America! Well, I say America is nothing! Without its ideals — its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash! A nation is nothing! A flag is a piece of cloth! I fought Adolf Hitler not because America was great, but because it was fragile! I knew that liberty could as easily be snuffed out here as in Nazi Germany! As a people, we were no different from them! When I returned, I saw that you nearly did turn America into nothing! And the only reason you’re not less than nothing — is that it’s still possible for you to bring freedom back to America!

The claptrap about so-called Olde English in this report comes from 'sources' who apparently just meant 'The text will not be modernised'. It's not Eggers who's full of crap in this moment, it's the report itself. My main question is what happened to his Labyrinth sequel? Can't we have that instead?

There's a reason the new Shaun the Sheep film is only about 90 minutes long and that's to leave at least a few jokes for everybody else. It's a ridiculously rapid fire gag machine. Shaun is a great cultural replacement for both Mickey Mouse and Harold Lloyd. How delightful.

I live very near the Millennium Library in Norwich, and the American Library within it. They carry hardbacks of new things, making that medium viable. They offer books published in the US and not the UK, broadening horizons. They stoke my sense of connection to books and reading. It's a magic place.
