It is not a defense of Donald Trump to note that the public has begun reacting to political and economic events in deeply irrational ways. They elected Donald Trump, after all! It’s funny he’s now on the wrong side of it, but pretending everyone abruptly sobered up is not wise.

Guys I’m sorry it just doesn’t make sense that a president with 3.4% inflation and stable real wages would have a worse approval on inflation than a president with 15% inflation and a 7% drop in real wages. If you try to argue that’s rational, you are literally rationalizing. It’s weird and spooky

Here's my bottom line: Much of what they are doing is bad. Much of what they are doing is unpopular. Pushback is working. We are winning. Keep fighting. Be creative. Push for what you'd want. Allow for insiders and outsiders. Realize that change takes time. Reduce harm in the meantime.

No drama there, no credit. For the most part, nothing happens at all. No secret agent stuff. Turning in hours at the dullest make-work job of all time, except unpaid. Just vague unending tension. They’re doing it for free, every day, by the thousands, so their neighbors can be SAFE and can be FREE.

The political press very clearly understands “truth” as a social agreement, a compromise position between everyone important enough to have an opinion. It did not reflect on how this would allow dedicated liars to go all-in on lies again and again and dramatically shift the position.

I never understand why people who tout their moderate and centrist credentials aren't directly asked about this.
Screenshot of the letter which reads: I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

This right here, this exact sentence, is THE problem in American political journalism. The IRA *was* cheap energy and good jobs! That was the whole bill! Democrats did precisely what political pundits are telling them to do and the pundits just ignore it.
the party now cared more about climate change and various academic fixations than cheap energy and good-paying jobs.

The key to Trump’s authoritarian encroachments is pretext. He pairs some shockingly dictatorial move with an incredibly thin pretext everyone knows is false - fighting crime, concerned about fraud - and every public figure talking about the situation feels the need to debate the pretext.

I increasingly feel certain that the thing that has driven politics insane is the growing ability of people to find ways to validate their beliefs, no matter how incorrect and irrational. It started in right-wing media but has become central to all political discussion.
