Finally reading the “who needs writing in higher education anyway?” piece, and it is truly one of the most blinkered perspectives on the scale and processes of modern learning I have ever encountered or imagined possible.

Right, okay everybody, I’ve had a lot of meetings and talks this week and I have to share some top line thoughts. Things are quite a bit worse than i am usually willing to share with people because panic does no good. It’s kinda bad. The baddies have the wind at their back. No denying that.

This book is a romp through our contemporary that blends shoe-leather reporting from “hot zones” with self-consciously non-conspiratorial theorization of the novel political alignments producing fascism now. Fortunately, it also reveals how brittle & already fractious those fascist coalitions are.

writing is the extreme overwork + social derangement in peak pandemic when one could draft peer-review revise a whole ass essay then completely forget it exists (as nobody else, all in the same straits, could notice) + then a phrase comes to mind + one remembers annakornbluh.com/wp-content/u...
For the purpose of
confronting the privatising logics of the present, let us consider some opposites:
objectivity and composition. Using these terms counterintuitively may
be a jolt; this section of the essay, in its prescriptive and notional junket, is
necessarily speculative.
Both of these terms have quotidian definitions that tend to fall outside of
literary criticism: objectivity is scientific reasoning, composition is artistic or
technocratic skill. Yet they can creatively dub aptitudes of literature that are
also aptitudes of criticism: a unique kind of thinking (an objectivity in the
literal sense of ob-jectum, throwing in the way of, both towards and
against, customary thinking) and a unique kind of making (putting together
something more than was already available in the plainly phenomenal
world). Practiced as the embrace of objectivity and composition, instead of
subjectivity and dissolutionism, criticism could have different prospects.
