In 1990, the US had ~130 tax coupons (credits, adjustments, deductions, etc), today we have more than double that: 271. To address the debt, we should start with the coupon book that doles out $2.3 trillion in discounts each year, dwarfing Social Security. www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Via @kedseconomist.com: Economic mismanagement is one of the biggest threats to Social Security, but it’s hardly discussed. For example, failing to invest in childcare can push parents out of the workforce, reducing the earnings—and payroll tax revenue—that help finance the program.

Imagine the conversations we would have on social security if articles like this listened to the SSA Actuary and said “An increase in wage inequality in the 1980s, followed by mismanagement of the Great Recession, had meant that the program’s payment costs exceed its incoming tax revenue.”
