Lists of the best things don't really work for me, because I'm unable to distinguish between things that I like and things that are good.

No Soft Cops, No Saviours: Abolitionist Notes Against Social Work in Libraries by @gossippractice.bsky.social
In this article, I look at the idea of hiring social workers into public libraries through the lens of abolitionist librarianship. Often presented as an obvious answer to make libraries more inclusive, there is little evidence within the published literature that this model is more effective than others. I argue that rather than expanding care and support for patrons, this model replicates dynamics of soft carcerality and saviourism within our organizations. Using principles of police abolition as my theoretical grounding, I offer alternative models and fields that we can instead draw on as we work toward more inclusive and liberatory public libraries.

Contemplative Blue Jay #birds
Gorgeous bird with blue crest, black and white face and silver breast. Its crest is flat, indicating that it is relaxed. The bird is facing forward with its head turned to its left. The background is almost black with a small cluster of wet leaves in the upper right corner of the frame. It’s a peaceful scene and the bird appears deep in thought.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

A bit of wisdom I’ve learned as an archivist: Everything is always falling apart. You can’t ever stop it because that’s what matter does. Your job is to slow the process down as much as you can. It’s true with documents, books, and art. And with life too- falling apart is what we do.

I've seen a lot of ALA posters, but I don't think I've ever seen this Margaret Sanger one before in my life.
A poster shows a black and white photo of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, a smiling woman in a crowd of people. It has her last name at the top, and the slogan 'Great minds meet at the library' at the bottom, in a sort of seafoam green. At bottom right, there's a quotation: "Life has taught me one supreme lesson. This is that we must--if we are to really live at all, if we are to enjoy the life more abundant promised by the Sages of Wisdom--we must put our convictions into action. My remuneration has been that I have been privileged to act out my faith."
