I'm curious, does the police chief service 'at will' to the mayor in Seattle? Or does the mayor need to prove a specific cause to fire the chief.

I do think direct-sale EV companies make the whole experience 1000x more tolerable and also remove much of the maintenance pain that accompanies car ownership.

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that Bluesky has been a net negative for US politics. They corralled everyone on the left into a little glass fishbowl where they shout at one another & everyone else ignores them. Meanwhile, all the pols & institutions stayed on X & are being dragged farther right.

Nothing happens to the land that’s currently a parking lot and an abandoned building if WinCo decides to leave in 15 years. It’s not like they want to take a chunk out of Greenlake Park. It’s an unused, ugly, commercial space.

How much do they estimate they need/are going to raise - and why not couple it instead to a tax on vehicle purchases/registration so at least the users of the roads end up paying? (I say thisas someone who primarily commutes by car)

I guess my main question to the powers that be always is - why would any large company want to open offices and occupy that expensive downtown real estate in Seattle? You get access to the same labor pool but pay significantly less in taxes. Plus now the commute is easier.

I love how the 'save the cemetary' group never advocates the solution where they buy the land and they do whatever they want with it, including leaving it a cemetary. Always their needs and wants but on someone else's dime.

I would love it if some of our Seattle billionaires built and sold beautiful, unique multi family housing without worrying about cost or ROI and see what resulted. Kind of like donating to the symphony in the modern era.

We've heard about the positives of the tax, but there's unfortunately no such thing as a free lunch. What are some of the anticipated harms associated with the tax and the magnitude of these effects in the long and short term?

As I was listening to public testimony on the Comp Plan today, I was thinking about the 19-year-old me who moved here in 2006 with $1,500 and no job. The fact that the city was open to me then, something that simply isn't true today, changed my life.

Here’s what will happen to our National Parks if Trump’s budget passes. Did you know America’s national parks actually generate more income than they cost to operate? Yet under Trump’s proposed 2026 budget, the National Park Service (NPS) would face devastating cuts:

This may be pro-natalist of me but but prorating the property tax on the number of people that live there made sense to me. 5 people in 2500 sqft is probably better land use than 1 in 1750?

The head of our country’s government is in the early stages of consolidating total power. We must of course reject this, but that is not enough. We have to respond by creating a different and better kind of American politics than we have seen before.
