The Vienna Basin, just northeast of Vienna, remains a remarkable mix of river channels. Scale: 16.6 x 26.5 km
Aerial lidar imagery shows the complex, swirling web of paleochannels and meandering river scars across a low-lying floodplain, watermarked by HydrologyNL in the bottom-right corner.
The image uses a monochrome, deep indigo and stark white color scheme to highlight the terrain's topography. Across the center and upper portions of the frame, hundreds of thin, glowing white lines twist, curve and form loop-like patterns, resembling brushstrokes or smoke trails against the dark background. A large, bright white river channel (Danube) cuts boldly across the lower edge of the frame, showing wide, braided patterns on the left that narrow into tighter, snaking meanders as it flows toward the bottom-right. Scattered faintly beneath the luminous river scars are thin, straight white lines indicating modern drainage ditches, roads and faint outlines of agricultural field boundaries.

The best definition of "slop" I can think of: it's slop if it took the person responsible for producing it less time to make it than it'll take for the person reading it I think it's a good definition because it also captures pre-LLM anti-social behavior, eg shit emails that needed time to respond

📝 My paper on generalized additive models (GAMs) in animal science is out! Learn nonlinear relationships from data, estimate growth rates and compare treatments, with cows, pigs and quail + reproducible #RStats code. Open access: doi.org/10.1016/j.an... #mgcv #AnimalScience #Statistics 🧪
Eight panels show body mass over 78 days for 57 Japanese quail. Columns represent control, T4, T3 and combined T3–T4 hormone treatments; rows separate females and males. Coloured points are measurements, lines are individual growth curves fitted by a hierarchical generalized additive model, and shading shows 95% credible intervals. Growth slows towards a plateau, with females generally reaching higher body masses than males.Eighteen panels show individual pig growth curves. Black points mark daily average weight estimates from a depth camera; blue lines show curves fitted by a hierarchical generalized additive model, with shaded 95% credible intervals. Weights generally increase over time, with differences in growth and measurement variability among pigs. Uncertainty widens where measurements are sparse or absent.Four-panel comparison of models fitted to a cow’s average daily milk fat production. Observations rise to a peak around weeks 8–10, then decline. The first panel shows fitted curves and uncertainty bands for Wood’s model, a Tweedie GLM and a Tweedie GAM. Residual plots show curved patterns for Wood’s model and the GLM, but little remaining pattern for the GAM.

Data characteristics of light detection and ranging (lidar) data represented as (a) point clouds or (b) waveforms; common lidar-derived products describing (c) the canopy and ground height or (d) individual tree woody structure; and (e) an overview of common structural metrics that can be estimated with lidar across different scales, shown above the lidar platforms typically used to derive those metrics. The lidar platforms named at the bottom of each panel indicate the platforms typically capable of producing that data type. The most relevant platform types (ALS, airborne laser scanning; MLS, mobile laser scanning; SLS, spaceborne laser scanning; TLS, terrestrial laser scanning; ULS, unoccupied aerial system laser scanning) for each type of data or application are denoted at the bottom of each panel. A new study by @jalsleben.bsky.social et al. introduces a national approach to map tree dieback across Germany using Sentinel-2 time series. Instead of just measuring greenness, it directly quantifies non-photosynthetic vegetation at a sub-pixel scale. Let's have a closer look ⬇️
Infographic announcing a new scientific publication titled "Mapping tree dieback using Sentinel-2 time series and generalized regression-based unmixing models reveals species-specific patterns across Germany" by Jonas Alsleben et al., published in the journal "Remote Sensing of Environment".

The top portion features a multi-panel graphic visualizing the progression of spruce dieback from 2019 to 2022 using Sentinel-2 satellite data. Color-coded from light beige (0% dieback fraction) to dark red (100% dieback fraction), it shows the spatial expansion of forest mortality in a selected area over time, paired with 2024 aerial imagery for validation. Earth Observation Lab Logo is shown in the bottom right corner.
