How do you compare a flood from 1920 with one from 2020, when historical discharge data often don't exist? Our new paper proposes FLOSEV, a flood severity scale that ranks events by their impacts (fatalities, affected municipalities, and damage to assets). doi.org/10.1007/s110...

When you map extreme rainfall, some gauges don't agree with their neighbours. Usually you'd catch those with a separate quality-control. But what if the interpolation model could flag them itself? That's what we explored with the BSSE framework across NW Italy. 📄 doi.org/10.1016/j.ej...

Not Just Scientists: How And Why Ordinary People Are Saving The Italian Hydrological Data
A recent article published by the SIREN team sheds light on what drives people to donate their time to this transcription project. Their main findings: 1) Many volunteers use skills they already have, like fast typing, to help the project. 2) Some volunteers see SIREN as a relaxing activity, something pleasant they do in their spare time. 3) Some are interested in water, science, or Italy, so they feel connected to the project’s purpose. 4) A good number of volunteers are retired and still very active in helping.

🌧️ How well do CPMs simulate rainfall extremes? We compared the VHR-PRO_IT convection-permitting model with records of Italian rain gauges. Results show better performance for long durations: short events are often underestimated, especially in coastal and lowland areas. doi.org/10.1016/j.wa...

Are extreme rainfall events intensifying in Italy? 🌧 In doi.org/10.1016/j.ej... we show that: - short-duration ordinary extremes increase all over Italy; - longer duration ordinary extremes exhibit negative trends in some areas; - the most intense extremes vary more than the ordinary ones.
