DeSantis's administration paid doctors tens of thousands of dollars to endorse restrictions on trans adults' health care and gave raises to state employees who went along with it, according to new documents unveiled in court. www.miamiherald.com/news/health-car…

Days before a state agency began researching whether transgender medical care for Floridians should be covered by Medicaid, officials started lining up experts known for going against the scientific mainstream. The resulting report and state rule revoked Medicaid coverage of treatments for gender dysphoria like puberty blockers and hormone therapy. It was thrown out by a federal judge, who in his June order called the rule an “exercise in politics, not good medicine.” Hundreds of pages of state employee testimony and internal agency records gathered as part of the federal case show how closely the state coordinated with consultants who have taken stances counter to major medical organizations on how to treat gender dysphoria. Those consultants were paid tens of thousands by the state. One grew friendly enough with a top agency official that he took to calling him “mighty Jason” and “J-man” over text messages.

Court testimony from state employees also reveal how an agency under Gov. Ron DeSantis veered from its own procedures to compile a report centered on a topic that has become a major plank of the governor’s presidential campaign. The state employee who was the lead author of the report testified that the process began with a request from the governor’s office. He also testified that he had not seen another instance of the state using this type of report to reevaluate treatments already covered by Medicaid. After the Medicaid report was completed, at least two Agency for Health Care Administration employees involved with it received raises well above the norm for their peers, state data show. “It seemed like a very politically motivated effort to exclude a group of people from coverage,” said Jeff English, a former agency staffer.

It appears Twitter has started rate limiting based on location. When I’m on my Colombian WiFi I keep exceeding the rate limit. When I turn WiFi off and use my SIM card the errors go away.

I’m all for the trillion dollar coin if it actually contains $1T of platinum. From what I’m reading, that won’t be the case! They plan to simply take the plaster mold for the silver eagle and change the denomination. The treasury says they can manufacture it within minutes.

linear algebra legend gilbert strang just taught his last lecture at MIT he is also the author of the best acknowledgments section in a math textbook ever

This is my 9th textbook on linear algebra, and I hesitate to write about myself. It is the mathematics that is important, and the reader. The next paragraphs add something brief and personal, as a way to say that textbooks are written by people. I was born in Chicago and went to school in Washington and Cincinnati and St. Louis. My college was MIT (and my linear algebra course was extremely abstract). After that came Oxford and UCLA, then back to MIT for a very long time. I don’t know how many thousands of students have taken 18.06 (more than 6 million when you include the videos on ocw.mit.edu). The time for a fresh approach was right, because this fantastic subject was only revealed to math majors—we needed to open linear algebra to the world. I am so grateful for a life of teaching mathematics, more than I could possibly tell you. Gilbert Strang
