time once again for my annual post: evacuating from hurricanes costs money and resources that a lot of people don’t have and the local governments often don’t adequately provide. evacuating is logistically difficult, sometimes impossible, and is hard to justify when the results are unpredictable.

We're in very different fields, and I engage with writing on a much smaller, more private scale, but I've been finding myself turning over many of the same questions re: my career, burnout, whether/how to rehab and recover that creative limb... Thanks for writing about this so honestly. <3

I’m more sympathetic to the median voter (derogatory) than most people on here but it seems like the only way you can instill some sense of civic virtue is to shove the consequences directly into their face after the fact

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is one of the best damn puzzle games I've played, the pitch I'd give is, imagine a Survival Horror game, but everything is puzzles. It's a wonderfully stylish experience, I absolutely can't recommend it highly enough.

the point of freeing yourself from the prison of ego is not getting there you’re not gonna do that. never gonna happen. the point is cultivating a practice of routinely asking “wait, I am too into my own shit here?” in every aspect of your dealings at least once or twice a day. anyhow good morning

Well, every time somebody posts this, me & my drummer get tagged, so, preemptively: mountain goats are wild, majestic animals. The Mountain Goats are a band. Out of respect to our namesake, we do lick pee from rocks when we’re in a national park, but nobody ever airlifts us anywhere. We walk home

Belated follow-up on this from the man himself:
Screenshot of a WhatsApp text message exchange between my dad and I.

[Dad] Heat reduces the youngs modulus or stiffness so steel. Euler buckling if columns is proportion to modulus so when that drops like 50% and other columns already broken bo overlords that floor. Then dynamic force of that floor dropping causes like a 3-6x multiplication when it hits next floor so even if that not soft still break and so on down each floor with more mass buildup as it goes down😁

[Me] Ohhhhh that's a little more complicated than high school level 😭

[Dad] You're a big girl now😁🤗

I read Jim Dwyer's "102 Minutes" around this time last year, it does a great job of pointing out the myriad code violations/loopholes/other cost-cutting measures that contributed to the eventual catastrophic structural failure of the WTC complex

Much later I read the NIST reports myself and was both surprised + impressed by how well he managed to frame the (very densely technical) findings in terms a high schooler could easily grasp. Granted he did use the phrase "the structural integrity of the building was compromised" verbatim but still

Probably about a decade ago I made a dumb off-hand comment vis a vis jet fuel and steel beams within earshot of my father, a structural engineer, and he genuinely stopped dead in his tracks to give a 30-minute spiel that somehow managed to combine "dad lecture" with "educational seminar"

For technical analysis: the NIST reports. For a layman's overview: "Debunking 9/11 Myths" by Pop Mechanics. The ELI5 I got from my dad (structural engineer for 30+ years, fwiw) is that excepting the moment of impact, lateral forces acting on WTC were minimal compared to vertical. Thanks for playing

Discworld QOTD, from Men at Arms
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars.
Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.
But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.
