I hear y'all like birds, so here's a bird. It's an African spotted eagle owl. Which is kind of two birds if you think about it. Even though it's one bird. And not an eagle at all, and totally just an owl. Shut up. (I got to do some falconry in Ireland and it is a delight. This bird was the best.)
Landscape-oriented photo -- pretty tight close up on the face of a spotted African eagle owl, which is not an eagle, and is an owl, and it's from Africa, but raised in Ireland. The bird has a dappling of brown and coffee cream feathers, and a bold yellow supernatural eye ringed by the featheriest feathers that ever did feather. In his black beak he -- er, actually, she, I think her name was Lulu -- has a little chicken leg/foot jutting out, all pinky-orangey-fleshy-colored. It's probably from a baby chicken. I dunno. Don't judge. Let the owl enjoy things. Don't bother her. She just wants her li'l chicken snack. Photo by me, Chuck Wendig.

how cool is this - young aspen trees are flourishing in Yellowstone thanks to wolves!! since their reintroduction, elk numbers have dropped and overgrazing has eased, allowing aspens to grow tall again. a living reminder that when predators return, entire ecosystems can heal.

OH MY FUCK THEY ACTUALLY DID THAT
Rabbi Yirmeya raises a dilemma: If one leg of the chick was within fifty cubits of the dovecote, and one leg was beyond fifty cubits, what is the halakha? The Gemara comments: And it was for his question about this far-fetched scenario that they removed Rabbi Yirmeya from the study hall, as he was apparently wasting the Sages’ time.

Hard to remember now, but not many admirable people talked publicly about sobriety circa 2007 — or had compassion for a young woman in crisis. This was invaluable. 🙏
