Just off the @yimbyaction.bsky.social Prop 45 debate. Was so helpful!!! I didn't know what to think of 45 before hand but after hearing both sides of the debate I'm now a clear YES on Prop 45! I hope the org votes to support it!

Retro-futurist propaganda poster overlooking a radiant, green utopian city of rivers, bridges, gardens, and gleaming towers at sunrise. Four people and a shaggy dog sit on a flower-covered hillside, gazing toward the city. Across the sky in huge block lettering: “the future could be magnificent, and you deserve a share of it.”

People mistakenly believe that unfunded inclusionary zoning is a way to tax developers and rich people to fund subsidized housing for the poor. It is not. In reality, it’s a tax on working and middle class renters. Actual rich people, who overwhelmingly own single family homes, pay nothing at all.

This is a remarkably lazy argument. Subsidizing cheap gas just guarantees continued car dependency. The true financial anchor dragging down the working class is living in a society where expensive private vehicle ownership is a mandatory tax just to exist.

we could solve the western water crisis overnight by simply charging alfalfa farmers market rates for water
Across the basin, alfalfa hay uses more than 5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water — that's 26% of all the water consumed in the basin. One acre-foot roughly equals the annual water use of two or three households.
In the Upper Basin, irrigated agriculture consumes 2.8 million acre-feet, or nearly half the water used by Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, the environment, reservoirs and water exports out of the basin. Cattle-feed crops, like alfalfa, consume 90% of all water used by Upper Basin agriculture.
That means alfalfa uses more water than cities, commercial users and industries across the entire basin:
Collectively, these users consume about 3.5 million acre-feet, or 18%, of the river's water. The Colorado River

beef is negative food. you turn 1000 calories of feed into 100 calories of beef and a whole lot of methane and cow shit. ai does produce more food than the beef industry (zero)

The streets where tickets were recorded cover an estimated 31 miles. The program now accounts for nearly a quarter of the city’s parking fines.

Everything that makes my dinner spot in Spain charming is illegal in most of the US: - zero parking - no setbacks - mixed use - single-stair buildings - a street width most fire departments wouldn’t allow I think it should be legal to build this in any US city, by right.

Different sorts of capitalists are often at odds with each other, and this is very much a case where unleashing the developers to undermine landlords produces positive results for the regular Joe who just needs a place to live.

A lot of NIMBYs get it in their head that developers and landlords are on the same side too and see developers profiting as somehow letting the capital that keeps housing unaffordable win. No, incumbent landlords largely don't want new development, they want artificially constrained supply.

This. Our transit agencies need the funding and political will to build great things and do so at great scale. You cannot lower costs without scale, and you will not build political will to scale something that is not great.

This is why farmers are pushing glozoism about data centers so they can take all of the damage they did to the water tables and blame data centers for it so they can keep damaging the water tables. Its literally just a trick by the far right AG lobby.
