My entire life I've heard centrists scolding leftist candidates with "oh, but how will we pay for all that? isn't your agenda unreasonable? shouldn't we run on a modest proposal for means-tested tax rebates?" Then Mamdani gets elected and makes it all look pretty easy. No wonder they hate him.

We need to protect Social Security for the next generation.
The Social Security payroll tax is capped at $184,500 in income. So if you're a nurse or construction worker, you pay Social Security on 100% of your income. But if you're a lawyer raking in millions, you only pay Social Security on a tiny fraction of your income. That is not right.

"What I failed to recognise was that, in some cases, it transformed those summaries into what appeared to be direct quotations," he says. "The danger isn't that AI writes bad prose. The danger is that it writes persuasive prose attached to facts that never existed.”
Screenshot of text that reads: Lots of writers now only quote from original interviews, archives or physical books — anything else is too dangerous. It takes forever and I’m not sure there’s another way.

Then there’s a picture of text that reads: Earlier this year, author Steven Rosenbaum took a phone call that turned his world upside down. The book be had spent three years researching and writing, he was informed, contained fabrications by AI tools. “When I learned there were factual inaccuracies in The Future of Truth, my first reaction was: that’s impossible.” Rosenbaum tells the FT two months after the discovery. “It had gone through a traditional publishing process with multiple rounds of editing and review.” Rosenbaum had been clear about the use of AI tools in his nonfiction book - ironically, a study of the future of truth and technology - but had used them only to research and organize material, including summarizing source documents and interviews. “What I failed to recognise was that, in some cases, it transformed those summaries into what appeared to be direct quotations,” he says. “The danger isn’t that AI writes bad prose. The danger is that is writes persuasive prose attached to facts that never existed.”

Impressive pushback, and something every other sitting judge should be doing.
SCOTUS’s “hubristic originalists” have also corrupted our elections more broadly. The supermajority, Eddins wrote, has given “corporations the same speech rights as flesh-and-blood Americans,” letting “dollars talk louder than voters.” Just last month, it shredded “coordinated spending limits Congress had enacted, ensuring “that those who bankroll elections drown out the ordinary person.” As a result, “billionaires spend to be repaid. Everyone else just votes. The Roberts Court has made sure one’s wealth counts more than another’s vote.”

The new racist double standard set up by Alito in the TPS ruling: if there’s any other motive in addition to the racism, the racism doesn’t count, but if the state wants to *prevent* discrimination against black people, that is racist and unconstitutional www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
The Roberts Court has been turning anti-discrimination law upside down for years. Its approach came into particular focus in May, with Louisiana v. Callais, in which it determined that not allowing Louisiana’s government to dilute Black votes was racist. In that case, Alito insisted that forcing the state to draw a second majority-Black congressional district would be an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander” because Republicans were entitled to discriminate against Black voters if they argued that their purpose was partisan instead of racist. The Court reaffirmed that position in a subsequent case dealing with Alabama, after a lower court had found ample evidence of deliberate racial discrimination, as opposed to the discriminatory effect of the Louisiana map.

Mullin now sets up an even more impossible double standard. If the government wants to discriminate against Black people, any pretext will do. “As long as there is a plausible basis—any plausible articulable basis—for the government’s action, then the Court will look to that basis as sufficient,” Aderson Francois, a law professor at Georgetown University, told me, “even in the face of evidence that government actors were motivated by animus.” If a Black person wants to prove they’ve been discriminated against, however, no amount of evidence will suffice.

The anatomical proximity and direct connection between the olfactory bulb and the orbital prefrontal cortex (OFC) make it a key neuroinvasion route for #COVID in the brain. In patients with #NeuroCovid, we observe thrombotic events, hypometabolism and atrophy in this region.
The image shows a text that reads:
The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is part of the olfactory cortex. Also controls emotions, reward value, reward-related decision-making, and inhibitory behavior
Damage to the OFC can lead to disinhibition, characterized by perseveration (repeated actions), reduced reversal ability (difficulty adapting to changing rules) and impulsive choices.

Those that desperately tell you how powerful Al is and that you simply must use it are looking for you to validate their own laziness or distaste for effort, and those who are impressed with LLMs' outputs tend to be people with low standards.
