A few Christmas ago I was gifted this plastic mass produced window crystal thing. Occasionally it makes pretty rainbows but during the eclipse it created these amazing rainbow crescents on the bedroom wall.

Ridiculously unaware BBC presenter on radio 4, points out the number of people classed as disabled has increased since 2019. But fails to state the obvious. We had a mass disabling event in COVID-19. We will continue to unpick the long term health (physical & mental) impacts for years.

A victorious Andy Burnham MP (24,937 votes), as the result of the Makerfield by-election is announced, flanked by defeated candidates Count Binface (a bloke in a vaguely sci-fi costume with a large bin for a helmet; 95 votes) and Robert Pownall (who is in a full body fox costume, holding a sign reading "Protect British Wildlife"; 18 votes). There are some other candidates there just out of shot but that's not important right now.

Over lunch I was inspired to write a short little business card size micro game. It is called Klankers won't like you anymore. It is a playful way to explore communication between humans.

Take turns creating messages for another player. This could be a plain text poem, abstract diagram or a collage of news clippings. The other player needs to tell you what the message means, if they are correct, you score 1 point and can move on to step 2. Send the message to an AI service and ask it to tell you what it means. If the AI can’t understand it and gives you an incorrect explanation of the message’s meaning you score 3 more points. Most points wins after 3 rounds.

One thing I should say about #UKGE is how absolutely joyous it was seeing hundreds (at least) of trans folk just being themselves and having fun playing games, surrounded by tens of thousands of allies. One day all spaces will be this good.

Listening to an Audiobook about the flu pandemic during WW1. Im struck by how US scientists knew flu was likely. They knew Canadian forces had a 28 day quarantine period when crossing the Atlantic. And yet the American forces didn't take that precaution & they spread Flu to europe. Millions died

The fertility rate has been falling since 2007, in large part because of a plunge among teenagers

There are some clues in the age breakdown: The fertility rate for teenagers dropped by 7 percent from 2024’s figure, setting another record low for the group. Since 2007, the rate for teenagers is down by 72 percent, and since 1991, when teenage fertility rates were at a high, the rate is down by 81 percent.

I want to be excited about Artemis and logically I know it takes years/decades to plan a mission like this. But at the moment to me it feels like American war propaganda, "look at our big rockets and powerful science". I know this feeling isn't logical but I'm struggling to shake the association.

Having to pay up front and claim back is one of the more extractive practices of an academic system built by and for people who've never had to worry about how much money's in the bank to cover travel and expenses. See also institutions that won't pay at all, forcing staff to cover all costs.

With everything happening in West Asia. I believe less UK residents will migrate to Dubai and similar. How many less could be significant. Am I right in thinking, if less people leave the UK, could pump up the net migration statistics? Less leaving but not necessarily more arrivals?
