Seriously, as an Old Dude, there are Old Dudes who go to Weed Shops that look like Apple Stores and Old Guys who still buy from the same guy they've been buying off for 20 years because they refuse to buy from Weed Shops that look like Apple Stores.

The frustrating thing to me is that Elvis seems to have come to Charro! ready to deliver, but the script and direction weren't there for it to matter. Also, he looks amazing and I wish there was a movie as good as this movie looks like it is with a poster sporting that rugged bearded Elvis.

The point is not that I thought briefly that there was a slight chance I saw mildly famous person, something about silver haired white guys from Seattle maybe?

I saw a guy in a Mariners jersey that had "Vitology" on the back. Then he turned so I could see his partial profile and I was like "That maybe could actually be Mike McCready."

Obviously not all AI flier art is "realistic," but the design is definitely cramped, AKA "detailed," AKA "good." The fact that we call it slop is not just insulting the garbage-ass flier, but in the minds of a lot of people, their garbage-ass taste.

Totally agree. It just involves more teasing to find the part that works.

My wife and I were planning a podcast once, and I was pushing for a segment where we'd watch the last sketch of every episode of SNL.

(Or maybe it's generational, and I don't connect to the weird bits of "the kids" and would have love the "all weird spice" of earlier groups. I suspect it's between these two poles, but not sure which way it leans.)

The weird thing for me is that in previous versions of the show, the one of these they'd sneak on once in a while was usually my favorite, and even when I didn't like it, I'd be glad they got something weird on. I think it's an interesting spice.

Californians, you have a very important job to do. Spread the word on why everyone should vote YES ON PROP 40 and no on 41 and 42. If you're confused about these propositions, billionaires like Sergey Brin and Peter Thiel want it that way. Here's a good explainer: www.tiktok.com/t/ZPL1pponT/

Agreed. Carob is quite good, but doesn't taste a thing like chocolate. Trying to convince children of this was an invitation to make them hate it.

One of my personal fav Ramones albums TOO TOUGH TO DIE was released today, 42 years ago. According to George Dubose, the Ramones' photographer, the band wanted to recreate the famous tunnel scene from the movie A Clockwork Orange for the cover. #punksky

A random guy walked up to me and muttered something while making the sign of eat food. I asked for clarification. He was asking if I smoke weed. I don't know why, because I wasn't interested, except... There's a gesture for that and it's not the same as the eat food gesture. Is that cultural?

It's a really good song. It's not my favorite of theirs, but I see why it got played. It has a nicely 1967 sound, if that's what you're shooting for. I have not heard the Heebee Geebees, but that sounds perfectly up my alley. I will need to fix that.

The other hits of this period, I don't remember from growing up. I've picked them up variously over the years, although rarely intentionally.

I'm even trying to wrap my head around someone who could conceivably say that they weren't at the house, didn't see the group chat until the next morning and still did nothing. Didn't tell a parent, a professor, file an anonymous tip... whatever. Just sickening.

Yeah, most of my man friends have never said a thing about sex. If I've heard anything about them actually having sex it's because their partner said something to my partner who mentioned it to me, which is still rare. Man friends talk to me about music and movies.

I sensed it but not enough to articulate at the time, but the "poptimism" trend always struck me as being less about bringing down elitist barriers and more about inverting them. Going from "Oh, you don't listen to Bartok? Tsk tsk" to "YOU MUST KNOW THIS TAYLOR SWIFT JAM, YOU ASSHOLE."

I really can't emphasize enough that Trump was never that popular. MOST politicians aren't actually that popular. The US system is set up to allow through certain types of candidates who then compete over the votes of a relatively small vector of the population. Trump benefited from this.

I detached myself from the monoculture 30 years ago, and I refuse to feel bad that I only pay attention to the parts that instantly catch my eye. It was contrarian as hell when I was 20, but at age 50 it’s simply not normal for me to get fomo about stuff aimed firmly at people who aren’t me.

It's wild to me how much we treat the 20th Century and particularly the second half of the 20th Century and a baseline of how humanity is or should be. Monoculture was always tenuous and never good. Even the positive elements were a mixed bag at best.

One day in 20-30 years we're gonna have a discourse about how weird it was that we problematized Taylor Swift the individual and not the entire entertainment industry for how she's presented. We will learn nothing, and probably argue about a giantess cyborg Arianna Grande clone at the same time.

Name a film you watched at a drive-in.
The classic YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN poster. It's a painting of a tall hill with an ominous castle at the top, the title in stone letters make up the bottom. An image of a mad looking Gene Wilder as Frederick Frankenstein on the left and a solemn Peter Boyle as The Monster tipping a top hat.

I find it remarkable that he seemingly never read Black Mask or its ilk. In his dismissive comments on mystery stories, including the handful he wrote, he seems oblivious to hard-boiled fiction. Had he discovered it, I think he could have done something with that, as well.

He wrote a decent amount of westerns. The humorous ones are the most collected, but he also wrote some more serious ones, such as The Vultures of Wahpeton.

He wrote historical fiction before Conan, but found the time it took to research them to his satisfaction made them too difficult to make a living at. The theory I've seen is that the Conan stories were, to a great degree, an attempt to write that style of story without having to be accurate.

One of the worst things about streaming with ads is no humans appear to be in charge of placing the ad breaks. Even shows which originally had ad breaks, where there was an obvious break in the narrative for it, don't have the ad breaks put in those places now

Is it even a taunt at all in that context? I wouldn't have taken it that way. If she said, "Hey, white boy, your chicken is ready!", I would have taken it as the mildest of taunts, taken my chicken and not thought much of it. Saying it casually to a co-worker like that? Nah.
